Pedants' corner

I am right in thinking it's "fazed" not "phased" aren't I? Please help, I'm doubting myself!

Or am I wrong? I've seen it over and over, to start with I thought it was just an odd error but it seems to be so common I'm worried it's me that wrong?

Yep, although I think it's a pretty forgiveable offence.

Fazed

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 13/12/2008 23:10

Tis fazed.

Yes. I think.

louii · 13/12/2008 23:10

I would say phased.

Drusilla · 13/12/2008 23:10

Yes, you are right.
Fazed: disconcerted
phased: to plan or carry out by phases

Fazed

Quattrocento · 13/12/2008 23:12

Oh you noticed it too? Thought I was the only pedant in town tonight ...

SilentMNight · 13/12/2008 23:12

And phased as in , well, phased.

OP posts:
PortAndStilton · 13/12/2008 23:12

You are correct: fazed.

I have a habit of getting this one wrong myself if I don't concentrate .

MistleSQUONKandWine · 13/12/2008 23:13

It depends what you want to say.

If you are disconcerted by something, you are fazed

If you have been putting something into place in stages, then you phased it in

Shitemum · 13/12/2008 23:14

You are right, it drives me mad when people use 'phased' when they obviously mean 'fazed'. I am a pedant tho'.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/12/2008 23:14

fazed.

Seeing 'I was phased by that' looks really weird if you are a physical scientist... are you a laser beam or summat?

SilentMNight · 13/12/2008 23:15

Absolutely, this thread is about disconcertion

Good, well glad to hear I'm right, that's a great way to round off a saturday night

I do like pedant's corner

OP posts:
thumbElf · 13/12/2008 23:18

don't really need to add here, but what the heck! Yes, it's fazed, not phased, in the disconcertion context.

I always get a bit when people use homophones incorrectly - for e.g. "here, here" instead of "hear, hear".

GrimmaTheNome · 13/12/2008 23:18

Pedants' corner... you wouldn't like to be in it all alone, would you?

SilentMNight · 13/12/2008 23:22

Ohh christ Grimma, you're right. Abject apologies to all pedants.

And thumbelf, that's another one which has had me worried "here, here", I was beginning to think that it was interchangable and it was only me who thought it was "hear, hear".

OP posts:
sunnygirl1412 · 13/12/2008 23:23

Fazed - definitely.

sunnygirl the happy pedant!

thumbElf · 13/12/2008 23:26

oh well, I might as well add in my other least favourite one (again! ) that always has me screaming at the page, even though it's not really a homophone -

When will people just get that the verb is LOSE, not loose? Drives me NUTS! "I just want to loose 3lbs..." ARRRRRGGGGHHH!!!

MistleSQUONKandWine · 13/12/2008 23:27

my extra 3 stones pounds are quite loose now you mention it

yeah, I hate that one as well, I have to sit on my hands not to follow people around the board, with my caps lock on, saying "IT'S LOSE!!!!"
