BONKERZ · 08/12/2008 17:45

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 08/12/2008 17:46

If you're my mum, then like 'ickier'.

Sigh.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 08/12/2008 17:47

lol . I have always said EYE-KEE-AH. When I met Dh he referred to ikk - ee -a's (!). He now says it my way

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 08/12/2008 17:48

and so do our children. And his from his previous relationship. And so on unto the nth generation...

ilovemydog · 08/12/2008 17:49

funny though - I know someone from Denmark and she pronounces it, 'ICK EE AHH'

Who knows Place is scary

mrsmalumbas · 08/12/2008 17:49

I think the swedish way is something like ick-ay-ah.

But most Brits I know say Eye-kee-ah.

mike ear rhymes with it

Ponders · 08/12/2008 17:55

Lidl is officially pronounced Leedle - I just can't

Kathyis6incheshigh · 08/12/2008 17:55

It always sounds so silly when my mum (not Swedish in the least) says Ick - kay - ya. I was mentally comparing it to 'pitsa' for 'pizza' and her other annoying ones.
You mean she is right?

In Germany we pronounced it aye-kay-a

Will practice the proper Swedish way now

RamblingRosa · 09/12/2008 10:59

I say eye-kee-ah but I'm not surprised to hear that's not how the Swedes pronounce it.

Like Ponders says, Lidl should be prounounced Leedle but that's not how we say it in English...not how I say it anyway

On a similar note, how do you say Addidas? With the stress on the first syllable or the second (A-dee-das). I've heard it said both ways.

Danish friend says ick - ee- uh.

quickdrawmcgraw · 09/12/2008 11:05

I say eye-kee-a because I'm not Swedish. I also say Paris even though the French say Par-ee. This is because I would be called (justifiably) a knob head if I started saying Par-ee.

RamblingRosa · 09/12/2008 11:17

Exactly Quickdrawnmcgraw.

Pruners, I think the Italian pronunciation of pizza sounds more like pitsa than peetsa. I say peetsa anyway though

elsiepiddock · 09/12/2008 11:19

It's ick-ay-ah, but pronouncing it that way is poncey unless you're swedidh.

elsiepiddock · 09/12/2008 11:19

swedish, obv

DeckHallsWithFIMBOughsofHolly · 09/12/2008 11:22

Another Eye Kee Ah here.

Although ds calls it Eye Eye Kee A.

christMAScomesbutonceayear · 09/12/2008 11:23

if you're my friend, then it's Eye -eek -ee, but she does that deliberately

seeker · 09/12/2008 11:25

One shouldn't mention it at all - it marks one out as being the sort of person who has to buy their own furniture.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 09/12/2008 11:30

Ick - ee - ah is correct, but everyone calls it I - Key - Ah, non?

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 09/12/2008 11:30

My mum and I both call it Ick.
