You're not being unreasonable that....

....x happened.
You're being unreasonable (or reasonable) to be upset that x happened, or to have reaction y to the fact that x happened.

It's probably been said many times before, but it bugs me every time.

Agree! My pet hate is PMSL - where does the 'S' come from???!

retiredgoth2 · 05/12/2008 20:06

....in place of the awful 'PMSL' may I advance 'UMDTM'

(unexpected micturition due to mirth)

I feel this would work.

Habbibu · 05/12/2008 20:07

Was thinking the same today, Kathy - it does grate, doesn't it?

Habbibu · 05/12/2008 20:07

Retiredgoth, for those of us with dodgy pelvic floors, I'm afraid the "U" is generally superfluous, sadly...

FossilSister · 05/12/2008 20:12

PMSL

(Didn't wee but turned the corners of my mouth up slightly.)

Kathyis6incheshigh · 07/12/2008 18:41

SS (=sniggered slightly, which is probably the reality behind a great many LOLs)

Glad someone agrees.

BOWCO: Bit Of Wee Came Out.

I think it's catchy.

southeastastra · 07/12/2008 21:51

lmao

Habbibu · 08/12/2008 14:21

SEA, the last isn't going to please pedants as it's patently Not True. Or you should be in medical textbooks.

Do men ever literally piss themselves laughing?

SpirobranchusGiganteus · 08/12/2008 19:38

They laugh when they have taken somebody else's piss.

Habbibu · 08/12/2008 19:42

Urologists must have a ball, then - laugh a minute if you're fitting catheters...

SpirobranchusGiganteus · 08/12/2008 19:44

If urologists have a ball then testicologists (surely that is the correct technical term) must take the piss. It's only fair.

BarcodeZebra · 09/12/2008 21:06

Orchidologists, would be more likely (the op to lop one off is called an orchidectomy - I kid you not). They just get bladdered.

JacksFirstChristmasMama · 09/12/2008 21:10

And I hate that the King's College Choir pronounces the phrase "in excelsis deo" (in the Gloria Christmas carol) as "in ek-shelsis deo"... it's Latin FFS, not Italian! It should be "in ex-celsis deo"!!

BarcodeZebra · 09/12/2008 21:17

Eh?

JacksFirstChristmasMama · 09/12/2008 21:27

Oh shit, wrong thread!!
Soorry!!

Habbibu · 09/12/2008 21:28

Thready!! I didn't know that you were Spiro! I thought I must know who you were, and went a-stalkin'.

Jacks - I think that may be something to do with articulation when singing - maybe less hiss, or something. I went to the same school that our Cathedral choirboys did, and they were taught to sing "egg-shell-sis", pretty much. Same school also taught Latin... Just a guess.

SpirobranchusGiganteus · 09/12/2008 22:34

Ah, sorry Habbibu! It's my Christmas name.

I love the fact that you can just pick up Jack's wrong-thread Latin pronunciation pedantry and run with it.

SpirobranchusGiganteus · 09/12/2008 22:36

I am confused by the whole orchid-testicles thing. Actual orchids look much more like ladybits than manbits. Does the root mean something like 'genital'?

Habbibu · 09/12/2008 22:42

wrong thread! Ah - thought it was a little tangential, shall we say... What was the right thread, then?

JacksFirstChristmasMama · 09/12/2008 23:25

The root word, "orchi-" is Greek and means testicle. Strangely, "testicle" comes from the Latin word "testis" which means witness. This is where we get the word "testify" from - in ancient days, men were required to swear oaths on their testicles, because presumably they were their most precious possessions . So to swear an oath a man was required to put his hand on his balls. Eventually this was changed to putting a hand on a bible while swearing an oath...

Thanks for running with my post there Habbibu!

SpirobranchusGiganteus · 10/12/2008 09:20

Thanks Jack. That is so interesting. I bet we'd have less perjury in court today if we went back to the ball swearing. And perhaps nork swearing for women.

SpirobranchusGiganteus · 10/12/2008 11:15

And I've just realised the consequence that, etymologically speaking, 'giving testimony' is more or less the same as 'talking bollocks'.
