I say CONtroversy - have never checked whether it is correct though. I say secretary (not secretry) and REsearch as well.

I'm Scottish if that makes any difference....

MargeSimpsonMyAlterEgo · 26/11/2008 21:28

Americans say alooominum because they spell it aluminum; equally they say "carburAtor" because that's how they spell it. Ho hum.

colacubes · 26/11/2008 21:45

Shit i thought i knew until i read that, i think I say contro versy, as for the Yanks, they do and say a lot of things that dont make any sense.

LiberalIdleOlogy · 26/11/2008 21:54

ooh skedule upsets me.

Contro versy is BBC English. Con troV ersy is US. I think the US version slips out my mouth if I'm not concentrating. My mother should never have allowed me to watch Cagney and Lacey as a teenager.

stretchmarkqueen · 27/11/2008 14:37

I have one!!

ibuprofen or ibuprofen???

Donk · 27/11/2008 16:07

On mature consideration, I find that I say REsearch for the noun and research for the verb...
Aluminium definitely - in the GB it has 2 'i's, I believe the Americans spell it with just one(?)

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 27/11/2008 16:09

ack

my mother has tons of these

mee-graine

thee-ETT-er instead of theatre

nitch instead of niche

used to drive me spare

And the Americans are completely barmy on the subject of science. WHY would anyone do science and engineering in non-SI (non-metric) units? It makes the maths so awkward. Plus it leads to embarrassing mistakes (not to mention crashing space vehicles) when collaborating with engineers/scientists of other nationalities.
