OK, I'm not wrong am I? It's like mischief but with a "v" and followed by an "ous" And if I'm right, why do the other 99.99% of the Irish population pronounce it as per my thread title? Do people in the UK do this too?

yes they do.
Including my MIL. Have turned all three small dc into mini-pedants who now correct grandma
She also says med-EE-cine which aggravates me beyond belief

So thanks for annoying me with that thought.

turquoise · 16/11/2008 23:02

I am so with you. It's my number one mispronounciation irritant (brought instead of bought is number 2, not that you were asking). It sure as hell isn't just Ireland, 99% of the UK do it and it drives me nuts.

You don't "make mischeeve" so why the hell would it be "mischeevious"?

Harrumph.

Mis - chif - ous ok
Mis - chiv - ous ok.

Anything else - extremely annoying.

chipmonkey · 17/11/2008 01:51

OK, soooooo glad its not just the Irish, but I'll bet this is an Irish-only thing......tremenjus!

engrossed? how is it possible not to pronounce that en-grow-ssed

Aitch · 17/11/2008 02:08

congradulations drives me a little nuts also.

stuffitllama · 17/11/2008 02:10

res-pite or ress-pitt

which one

ps you are right about mischievous

HeadFairy · 17/11/2008 04:57

while we're at it...

Veg-tah-bles

or

Veg-ge-ta-bles

The extra syllable makes me wince, don't know why.

Flightattendant4 · 17/11/2008 05:25

I agree but I am afraid I wholly support Skellington

I swore that was correct until I was at least 7. I was a little pedant but did get it wrong sometimes

SuperBunny · 17/11/2008 05:40

Oh no, I had no idea this was a contentious issue. People here say 'mis-cheev-ee-ous'

I am a secret support of skellington and I like when DS says pun-kin but publicly it is always skeleton and pumpkin. Always.

dontletbedbugsbite · 17/11/2008 05:52

Just losing my mn virginity - new to mn.

I'm feeling mis-chev-ous.

Last night Tina Arena told a singer on tv his pron-ounce-ee-ation was improving. I laughed.

Ree-search. Drives me mad but is so common I think most people think that's the correct way. Ditto past -oral, emphasising oral - very common in the education world.

Speaking of which - do you mind if I also share my intense irritation at the use of 'Mum' by teachers ( except this one) and Health Service employees as in : 'have we spoken to Mum about this?'. Aargh! What's wrong with 'has anyone spoken to her mother about this?'?

So glad this section exists.

prettybutterfly · 21/11/2008 20:27

Oh, mischievious is grievious.

RamblingRosa · 24/11/2008 14:47

Campion - I think ree-search is an americanism (not that that makes it any less irritating!)

I quite like being called "mum" by the nursery staff . I found it really odd at first though.

Waswondering - I've never heard engrossed pronounced to rhyme with "gloss". I'm trying to imagine in with a Scottish accent. I quite like it!

campion · 24/11/2008 19:03

RamblingRosa - I don't doubt you're right. When are we going to start saying tomayto and labratory? Only a matter of time, I fear.

Is ' gender' when we mean 'sex' an Americanism ? I'm afraid that bugs me too . I thought sex was a biological fact.

RamblingRosa · 25/11/2008 08:52

I'm not sure if the gender confusion () is an Americanism. I think it's just that people don't understand the difference between the two concepts. Oh, the other Americanism that p*sses me off is 'pants' instead of 'trousers' and 'movie' instead of 'film' but I'm sure I've said that before in pedants' corner so I should stop repeating myself!

duchesse · 26/11/2008 08:24

Aaaaaaaargh! Eyes bleed and duchesse threatens self-immolation

Almost my biggest bugbear, this one.
