Spelling practise

DD came home with her first spelling book today, which the teacher has called: Spelling Practise.

Would it be very pedantic of me to correct the 's' to a 'c'?

The irony is just too great!

What hope is there for our LOs when even teachers get nouns and verbs confused?

Oooooooo. (sucks in air through teeth)

I wouldn't be able to resist correcting it myself. Send a note back with marks out of 10 for the teacher too.

PavlovtheCat · 12/11/2008 15:56

It should be 'spelling practice'. Or 'to practise spelling'.

I would say you should correct it, without a doubt. How can you expect your DD to take teachers seriously if they get it wrong? She might not know, but you do, and you will teach her correctly which in turn can cause your dd to lose some respect for her teachers. Not a good idea.

I'd definitely correct it!

Hobnobfanatic · 12/11/2008 15:59

With anything else, I would correct it, but I have a pathetic authority complex with teachers!

I think I might just mention is 'casually' tomorrow, rather than correct it on the book...

I hope I'm brave enough!

Shaking head in despair here. I wouldn't be able to resist correcting it either. How depressing.

BoccaDellaVerita · 12/11/2008 16:01

I'd probably correct it on the book. I once pointed out to the head teacher that the notice board saying "St Cakes School" needed an apostrophe. I think I must be over my authority complex.

It's a common mistake to make, but you should send a note to the head teacher warning him/her that the teacher in question invites ridicule.

The rule is quite simple. In the UK, practice is a noun, and practise is a verb. If you are unfortunate enough to be American, you do not make the distinction.

I'd shuffle up to the teacher and mention it kindly, with humour.

Then I'd get my red pen out and scrawl PRACTICE YOU IDIOT all over the front of said book.
