Grandad or Granddad?

Which is the correct spelling? I've always used Grandad but my mother is sure it's Granddad. All the cards in the shops seem to spell it with one 'd'.

It's colloquial so I think it's grandad. It's a short hand version to grandfather so I think the concatenation is ok in this instance.

It is definitely Granddad!! It has recently been added to the dictionary with one "d" to accommodate the hundreds of illiterate people who are adopting the "Amercian" way of spelling the English language. When I was little, every single card for Granddad had two "D's" - now I really struggle finding one spelt correctly and therefore refuse to buy one.

Granddad is definitely two D's!! Otherwise, they would not only be not GRAND, the poor Granddads would become Grans!! Poor Granddads.

My mum used to spell it Granddad and it always looked wrong to me - I could hear a Yorkshireman inside my head saying "aye, he's a grand dad!"
