I'm a little late with this but WTF...

When did we start to refer to the "uneven bars" in gymnastics? Are we now to dim to understand the word asymmetric?

We didn't podium in this event, much less medal....

harpomarx · 20/08/2008 20:38

so, are the other ones called 'even bars' now?

palaver · 20/08/2008 20:39

What do they call the parallel bars now? The same height ones?

moodlumthehoodlum · 20/08/2008 20:40

LOL.

I have been all through the olympics at this new verb "to medal". How ridiculous.

SqueakyPop · 20/08/2008 20:40

Why is asymmetric any better than uneven?

harpomarx · 20/08/2008 20:40

'cos parrallell (sp?) is a well tricky word.

. Barcode 'to podium', 'to medal'?

SqueakyPop · 20/08/2008 20:42

Why is asymmetric any better than uneven?

BarcodeZebra · 20/08/2008 20:45

Well, in relation to each other they are asymmetric. Whereas they both look pretty even to me.

They've been called asymmetric bars for as long as I can remember. Why is there any need to change?

OP posts:
Lio · 20/08/2008 20:46

Uneven makes them sound wobbly. Although they are, or course, symmetrical if you look at them perpendicularly, if you see what I mean.

SqueakyPop · 20/08/2008 20:46

They are an uneven height from the floor, and asymmetric if the line of symmetry is perpendicular to the floor.

GrimmaTheNome · 20/08/2008 20:47

Uneven bars sounds like what you find in
ye olde inns

BarcodeZebra · 20/08/2008 20:47

Sorry, JackieNo, I forgot that without the application of the little yellow faces I am unable to convey irony. I've heard both podium and medal used as verbs and my skin crawls every time.

OP posts:
JackieNo · 20/08/2008 20:49

It's really grim, isn't it.

SqueakyPop · 20/08/2008 20:50

The whole medalling as a verb has been done to death by Nicky Campbell since the weekend.

PuppyMonkey · 20/08/2008 20:50

asymmetric is a blardy brilliant word imho

Habbibu · 20/08/2008 20:51

On the issue of "to medal", I refer m'learned friends to the following shock horror revelation.

SqueakyPop · 20/08/2008 20:51

I agree, but I love all things mathematical.

Habbibu · 20/08/2008 20:52

Barcode, you back to life then? Good to see Olympic pedantry still vexing you!

JackieNo · 20/08/2008 20:52

Nooooo - say it's not so, Habbibu

Habbibu · 20/08/2008 20:53

Tis. Positively ancient. keep meaning to tell Nicky Campbell. And BCZ threatened to do 'imself in over it.

palaver · 20/08/2008 20:53

asymetric is far more precise IMHO as other have said uneven bars sounds like the bars themselves are uneven (like uneven steps) , not merely at differing heights

SqueakyPop · 20/08/2008 20:55

Neither term is meaningful unless you have a point of reference.

Assuming the said point of reference is the floor, and looking on sideways, both terms mean exactly the same thing.

palaver · 20/08/2008 20:55

oops aysemmetric
