Stupid signs...

Probably been many threads on this very subjest but I get irrationally irritated when people use an apostrophe when not required. A roadside sign on my way to work reads 'Puppy's for sale!' Puppy's what??!
Also on big sign in shop window - SALE! Hat's!! Scarve's!!(yup) Book's!! I mean COME ON. Don't any of these people read? Goodness I sound like my Grandmother....

Ooh no UnquietDad - presumably there couldn't have been more than one Bishop there?

HensMum · 14/07/2008 13:53

Outside our local butcher's shop is a sign that says "BBQ pack £10. 10 burger's. 10 sausage's. 10 ribs".
The apostrophes after burger and sausage annoy me but what really irks me is why they didn't put one after ribs.

I must confess I am very tolerant of the spelling/grammar mistakes in dd's nursery reports because I know it's more important they are kind and cuddly people than good at English

I suspect I may be less generous when she is older though so do not quote me on this in two years' time...

roomforthree · 14/07/2008 14:10

At a soft play centre - "Hot drinks may scold."

Lakelover · 15/07/2008 11:07

Hot drinks may scold! Brilliant. Love dack point too! I shouldn't complain as ds is very happy at nursery and loves tucking into his samwhiches. Sounds like a child in his class doesn't it? Sam Whiches. My sister has the best pendantic job in the world - she's a sub-editor for a magazine and gets to check spellings and grammar for a living!

We saw a great one this weekend and I immediately thought of this thread.

A brand new £7.5million spa hotel has opened here this week.

The local newspaper display boards outside the newsagents says:

"NEW SPAR HOTEL OPENS"

What next? Is Londis going to expand and open up a health farm?

StealthPolarBear · 03/08/2008 21:10

lol Aldi Wine Bar

Overmydeadbody · 08/08/2008 13:47

Last time I visited Wells-next-the-sea I spotted no less than five shop signs with stray apostrophes in them, including:

Book's Music CD's

Get your Cream scone's here!

Sidge · 08/08/2008 13:52

There is a banner near us that says "Free Sat Nav's (for thieves if you leave them visible in your car" - from Hampshire Constabulary!

You'd have thought they would have checked it...

cornflakegirl · 08/08/2008 13:55

Sidge - I think there is a school of thought that says apostrophes in plurals of abbreviated words is okay. Don't hold with it myself.

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/08/2008 14:01

I live in a village called Bishop's Cleeve. HATE it when the apostrophe is left off. DDs uniform whilst at junior school had it embroidered on her school uniform without the apostrophe.

moshie · 08/08/2008 14:01

'Credit cards not excepted' at a cafe in Ambleside, I was very tempted to go and have something and pay with one. Can you imagine the conversation-'But the sign says you take them','Er,no'

StealthPolarBear · 08/08/2008 14:39

You should ahve complained about the double negative

theinsider · 08/08/2008 14:43

I drove past a sign yesterday that said "[roadworks] will be taking place here starting between May 2008 and December 2008".

Legoleia · 08/08/2008 14:45

Wasn't it on here that we discovered:

"Stationary"

At WHSMITH For sobbing out loud....

StealthPolarBear · 08/08/2008 14:47

Well as long as it wasn't moving I don't see the problem

PuppyMonkey · 08/08/2008 14:52

I live on "St Wilfrids" Road - with no apostrophe on the street sign. I have to pass it every day and I nearly faint every time.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/08/2008 14:52

The worst I've ever seen, in a shop in Camden Market

'When you've brought something it will not be bought back'

The misuse of bought/brought, whilst common, is especially puzzling here.

TheLadyofShalott · 08/08/2008 15:09

This is my favourite shop sign (photo by DD, who obviously inherits my pedantic nature)

Its the total uselessness of the information that I love....

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/08/2008 15:14

Not at all relevant to the thread but I was just trying to find a particular one to link to and saw this. Brilliant.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/08/2008 15:19

Oh, and that is fab thelady

StealthPolarBear · 08/08/2008 15:31

lol rb

ninedragons · 08/08/2008 15:55

This is not technically incorrect, but needs to be shared nonetheless. A friend sent me a photo of the direction signs in a Chinese hospital. The gynaecological department was translated into English with literal flair as "cunt examination room".

BettySpaghetti · 08/08/2008 17:25

pmsl ninedragons, that is fantastic!

No mistaking what goes on in that room then (I was going to say "no beating around the bush" but thought that was a bit )
