Ooh Arrr

What is this addiction to the intrusive "arr"? It first became annoying about fifteen years ago when Edwina Currie suddenly warned us about salmonella in "roar eggs". The Conservative government of the day were also worried about "Laura Norder".

Now, If "raw eggs" and "law and order" are too difficult to say for people with a university education, why is it that in other countries people without one manage just fine?

Do 'roar eggs' have the lion stamp

PrettyCandles · 08/07/2008 14:05

That's because (a) we're rubbish at teaching languages in this country, even our own language, and (b) a sad lack of snobbery regarding Received Pronunciation and the need for it in public life.

Another thing. If people can't stop themselves saying "drawring pins", why don't they also talk of "chewring gum" and "mowring the lawn" and "bowring and kowtowring"?

This isn't pedantry! It's diction! True pedants demand the removal of non-pedant threads!

maidamess · 08/07/2008 16:42

Wed- nes day not Wensday

tearinghairout · 08/07/2008 16:52

No-one says Wed-nes day, do they? They'd sound bizarre.

tearinghairout · 08/07/2008 16:53

A bit like saying Ly-cester Square, or Fol-kes-stone.

PrettyCandles · 08/07/2008 18:44

And why cannot one be pedantic about diction?
