Pronouncing 'research' as 'r'search'

My parents always tell me off for pronouncing the 'e' in research. They say this makes it 're-search', as in, looking for something again, and the correct way to pronounce it is 'r'search'. They both had posh private school/top-tier university educations, whereas I'm a local comp/no uni type,, so I suppose they do know best. The thing is everyone else I've ever come across seems to say 'rEsearch' and it feels silly when I force myself to say it their way. What do you think?

I’m with your parents.

One is British accent (stress on search) and the other is American (stress on Re, when used as a noun).

See also words like "reverse" (used as a noun) which I've heard pronounced REverse in an American accent.

I've never heard that one but have heard "refresh" being pronounced "REfresh" by Americans and young people online.

Ree-search sounds uneducated and usually is IME e.g. Googling something and claiming to have ‘done research’.

@lottiegarbanzo It's a regional variation on pronunciation, nothing to do with education.

Both things can be true.

My direct experience is of Ree-search coinciding with ignorance of what research might entail.

R’search. The first ‘e’ is a schwa.

I used to work in market research -
I’d say both pronounciations are correct.

it can depend on whether it’s a noun or
verb:

Oh yes, ‘Market research’ typically is pronounced re-search IME.
