Anyone find it irritating when British people write mom instead of mum? They still pronounce the word mum, but spell it the American way? Why???

OP posts:

Its a dialect spelling in some parts of England.

ElizaSchuyler · 11/08/2026 12:14

The only people I know who use mom are from Birmingham/Black Country and it is definitely not American, it's just how it has always been there.

PlantsAndSpaniels · 11/08/2026 12:25

Ive always called my mum mum, even though she always signed cards mom. Its a regional thing.

ohyesiseethatnow · 11/08/2026 12:38

Yes, it’s a regional thing OP. I have family in Birmingham and they have always used “mom”.

Dovesono · 11/08/2026 12:39

No, because Iearnt on here that it's regional. But I do find it annoying when it's capitalised unnecessarily.

Unblushingly · 11/08/2026 12:40

I mean, I’m not even from the UK and I know about the West Midlands ‘mom’ usage.

6ate9 · 11/08/2026 12:44

I find it weird ( and cringey) when adults call their mother mummy!

Letmeknowifyouchangeyourmind · 11/08/2026 12:45

Regional dialect ("Mom" has been done to death on MN) isn't really what Pedants' corner is about.

Castletickedoff · 11/08/2026 12:47

I remember when I moved to uni and discovered no one out of Birmingham said Mom 😆it’s always been that way in my region - even my great granny who certainly wasn’t Americanised still said Mom.

PituitaryPippa · 11/08/2026 13:11

Not this again!! I am from the Black Country. We say mom and spell it the same way.

katmarie · 11/08/2026 13:49

It’s that time again already? Gosh these annual Mum/Mom threads seem to come around so quickly these days!

I grew up in the West Midlands, and use Mom, always have, and so did all the kids I went to school with. It’s not an Americanism.

Seymour5 · 11/08/2026 13:52

In parts of Yorkshire, and possibly Liverpool? Some people say ‘mam’ or ’our mam’. A local card shop sells cards with ‘Mam’ on them.

6ate9 · 11/08/2026 14:26

Welsh people commonly call their mother mam. (It’s the Welsh word for mother.)

Vodkamartini3olives · 11/08/2026 17:07

Here we go again!

Completely normal in Northern Ireland

Needmorelego · 11/08/2026 17:15

Mom isn't "American".
USA, Canada, South Africa and SOME PARTS OF THE UK call their mothers "Mom".
🙄

afaloren · 11/08/2026 17:21

Completely normal in the Midlands.
