I keep seeing this in posts and it's not 'expected time of arrival '. What are people using this for?

I'm sure it's a mistake instead of e.g. or i e. ?

Any ideas?

I think people mean ‘edited to add’?

I find it weird. Just edit and have done with it. No one needs to read your motivation for adding a thought.

(I could be completely wrong!)

I try not to use too many acronyms (I know they aren't usually acronyms but I can't remember the proper word...) so I write Edited to..... and say something like correct spelling, add second comment, etc. to save nosy/interested people the faff of reading the edit.

SeditiousPam · 17/06/2026 10:56

But the edit is what people see in your post. No one cares whether you’ve changed the original because of a typo, or because you need to clarify, or whatever.

I find seeing ‘ETA’ or an explanation of an edit interrupts the flow of conversation.

It’s both, isn’t it? Depends on the context.

Ahhhh brilliant thanks. Glad to know it's not another 'ect' type of thing 🙈

I think you have to pay a £5 er if you even mention ect. 😉

BillieWiper · 17/06/2026 11:22

I don't know why people put anything about how or why they edited their posts. Like people who say 'edited for SPAG'. It's like, so what? People can see your previous versions anyway if they're that way inclined.

AllotmentTime · 17/06/2026 11:26

@SeditiousPamThey do care if they've replied and then the original poster has changed the meaning. So it's equally reassuring to know they haven't.

If you're re-reading an edited post about someone's DS hating a film, and you're thinking "I swear she said DD before", it's useful either way to have "ETA the name of the film" or "ETA DS not DD" so that you know whether you're misremembering.

The second of course would be slightly incorrect because it's "replaced" rather than "added", but ETA is the common acronym.

upinaballoon · 17/06/2026 17:55

I think the guidelines tell us not to go back and essentially change the post, but to use the edit just for small things, so I do explain why I've edited.

SeditiousPam · 17/06/2026 18:15

Ha! Often, the minute I’ve posted I realise I’ve said something illogical. Or I may have typed slowly and by the time I post someone else has written something that makes nonsense of what I’ve just said. So I edit. 🤷‍♀️
