Of course.

Weirdconditionaltense · 09/04/2026 08:09

Yes I do but for me, "they're" and "their" are more irritating.

curious79 · 09/04/2026 08:15

Every time - sometimes it can be an autocorrect playing out

Seymour5 · 09/04/2026 08:16

I certainly do!

topcat2014 · 09/04/2026 08:19

I notice illiteracy every time

MagpiePi · 09/04/2026 08:38

I notice all the your/you're, there/their, bare/bear etc. mistakes. Drives me mad.

grumpygrape · 09/04/2026 10:52

Where and were are among the things I notice which makes a small part of me die each time, well, maybe only cry, but I’m still very confused about the prevalence of ‘fir’ instead of ‘for’.
Is it because the I and o are next to each other on the keyboard, autocorrect, or people spelling it like they say it ?

(Bravely posting in Pedants’ Corner with fingers crossed I haven't made a bloomer…. ) .....and then editing because I did 🙄

I think a lot of the problem is predictive text and fat fingers on a phone. But as a former teacher, I 'proofread'/correct everything I read, in my head. Mistakes, including my own, drive me mad!

grumpygrape · 09/04/2026 10:58

I try and proofread too but as you can see from my post above, I still manage to get it wrong sometimes !

NamingNoNames · 09/04/2026 13:13

...‘fir’ instead of ‘for’. Is it because the I and o are next to each other on the keyboard...?
Yes.

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 09/04/2026 14:20

I think it's an autocorrect mistake. I use "swipe to type" which guesses what you want to say based on how you glide your thumb over the keyboard so I get very odd sentences sometimes e.g it mixes up "child" and "cold" most times. I do try and proofread my messages but because I know what I meant to write I don't always notice the errors like the intended reader might.

Yes.

Absolutely. Because it’s an obvious typo, it doesn’t irk me like where/were; loose/lose etc.

sorrynotathome · 09/04/2026 17:16

My phone insists on inserting unnecessary apostrophes - changing "were" to "we're" etc. However I do notice every time and swear at the phone while jabbing at it to make it stop.

TheHedgehogParade · 09/04/2026 17:33

Yes, I see it all the time. I believe it actually predates the internet - I certainly remember seeing it occasionally on internal (paper) documents when I worked in the Civil Service in the late 80s, along with other delights such as "carn't" and "discusting".

Yes. Old faithfuls, aren't they?
Alot, abit, aswell, incase.

OK, it’s just that I have heard people say things like ‘is that fir real?’, ‘is that fir me?’, so I wondered.

My phone refuses to consider I might want ‘ ‘we’re’ if I type in ‘were’. (I’ve had to go back and manually insert the apostrophe here) It does offer werewolf and werewolves as options, so I’m not sure what it thinks I’m up to!
