Excited for 2026!

When did people start saying “for” all the time?

Surely they are “excited about such and such”

or “excited for someone ” - i.e. people not events?!

I'm very excited on 2026's behalf!
A similar thing that annoys me is that book, Bored of Lunch. Shouldn't it be with?

tobee · 02/01/2026 16:13

Isn't that an Americanism @AyeKarumba ?

But bored of lunch is just ignorant

Bonden · 02/01/2026 16:16

This started in the UK along with the insidious rise of all Americanisms.

We’ll be saying “I know my rights” and referring to “food stamps” before the year is out, mark my words.

MILLYmo0se · 02/01/2026 21:57

'I am bored with lunch?' is that correct? Though I'm Irish so I speak a very different type of English 😂😂, 'of lunch' sounds fine to me

dailyconniptions · 02/01/2026 23:18

Yep, sick to death of it! It's 'excited about', but you rarely see that now, unfortunately. I must also stress that I find the 'excited' a bit infantile. It sounds like something a 5 year old would say. Can no one simply be 'looking forward to...' anymore?

Bonden · 03/01/2026 10:09

I’m bored WITH lunch, (even better would be “bored with my lunch”) is better English in a formal sense

“Can I get a coffee” 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Also constant references to the Americanisation 'paychecks'. I keep reading about living paycheck to paycheck. We don't spell cheque that way. I also doubt whether anyone is paid their wages by cheque anymore. I wish people would think before they speak or write.

What about 'bored by lunch'? Elsewhere, I've just seen 'I was pleasantly surprised of the amount I got'.

Bored by lunch is correct, isn't it?
I've never heard "surprised of", but it's awful!

Not sure. It's 'tired of life' (or indeed 'tired of lunch') but not 'bored of life'. 'Bored by life' and 'bored with life' sound subtly different in quality. Maybe it's generally bored by lunch as it happens every day, but specifically bored with this lunch as it has too much salad.

I saw that book on sale in Tesco. I was transfixed and doubting myself.

Yes I think bored with lunch is fed up of the same old sandwiches. Bored by lunch is fed up of taking a break every day at the same time. Whichever is true, bored of lunch is definitely not right!

Bored by lunch makes me think of someone being hit by sausage after sausage, perhaps followed by a cucumber, a few sticks of celery, or a carrot, enlargibg and refining various orifices. 🤣🕳️🪏

I have this exact discussion with my children (in their 20s).

They often ask me if I am “excited for” something and I always answer that I am not, but that I am looking forward to it.

Perhaps it’s my age, but it’s not often that I get excited about things these days!

ThunderThighs123 · 15/01/2026 13:44

I hate the erroneous use of 'super' which seems to be ubiquitous these days.
Is 'very' on its way towards extinction?
Ditto misused apostrophes/ no apostrophes at all. How can a generation fluent in the use of the emoji be defeated by this useful little chap? The mind boggles. 🙄
