Pedants' corner

Grrr...

Not really pedantry, but irritating word so best place for it I feel.

I cannot stand people who say:

'I heart X'

I heart? Please. It makes me cringe like you would not believe. I hate it.

Rant over. Thank you.

I cant get my head around that either

bluefox · 11/06/2008 17:05

Agree.

ahundredtimes · 11/06/2008 17:08

I like it.

It is lighthearted yet affectionate.

If I said

'DSM I love you'

you'd think 'Crikey, that was unexpected, nice yet a bit odd, not sure how to reply'

If I said

DSM I like you

you'd think 'Hmm. Bit stalkerish, bit wet, little bit creepy'

BUT if I say

DSM I heart you.

You think 'Oh that 100x is nice. What a lighthearted yet affectionate thing to say'

See?

edam · 11/06/2008 17:10

Very irritating. Why on earth say 'heart' when you mean 'love'?

cornsilk · 11/06/2008 17:12

But it doesn't mean 'love' though does it? It means 'like+'

DirtySexyMummy · 11/06/2008 17:12

I wouldn't, 100x.

See, I think 'DSM, I love you' is a little strong, but nice all the same.
'DSM, I like you' is nice, its friendly and its sincere.
'DSM, I heart you' is weird. We would not be friends.

But 100x - I do think you are great

I like totally am agreeing with this thread.
Infact I heart it.

StealthPolarBear · 11/06/2008 17:14

That'll have the pedants running for cover!

UnquietDad · 11/06/2008 17:15

Oh, I agree, so much. Can't stand this "heart" business. Has it come about since that film "I [heart] Huckabees"?

I thought at the time it was never actually intended to be called "I [heart] Huckabees" and that the [heart] was just a shorthand for "love", as in the "I [heart] NY" stickers.

DirtySexyMummy · 11/06/2008 17:15

No, I think it means love.

Like, when someone is writing 'I love you' they may instead write a letter 'I', then draw a love heart, then write the word 'you'.

Someone, one day, decided to say what they see and read out ' I heart you'. Maybe they had been watching catchphrase, or reading a pictogram.

It caught on.

That was to cornsilk. Unquiet - you are right.

StealthPolarBear · 11/06/2008 17:18

she hearts you yeah yeah yeah

UnquietDad · 11/06/2008 17:18

I mean, it doesn't make sense, does it? "I heart it." How can you "heart" it? Heart is not a VERB.

AllFallDown · 11/06/2008 17:22

Isn't it a verb? What about 'I heart it through the grapevine'?

UnquietDad · 11/06/2008 17:22

ba-doom-TISH

AllFallDown · 11/06/2008 17:24
