Just started a book on my Kindle - fortunately a free book - and the reporter was stood on the street corner; the protagonist was sat on her sofa…

One of my pet hates, so much so that I don’t know if I can finish the novel 😂

😉 well played

tarheelbaby · 22/11/2025 16:36

I hate 'was/were sat' also. In correct English, 'sat' is the active simple past. In the continuous past (imperfect tense in other languages) it's 'was/were sitting'.
Passive voice options used 'seated': e.g. We were seated by the owner of the restaurant at the best table.
I read a lot of paperbacks and I correct the grammar. Petty, I know, but it soothes me.

@AlexaStopAlexaNo , I think it's 'I'd of cried if I would of read that!!' (but omitting the comma is spot on!) 😂

Catpiece · 22/11/2025 16:38

I don’t know why this has become so prevalent. Unless you were placed there by someone else, you are sitting or standing. When I see “I was sat” it makes me feel like smashing my own face in

RoamingToaster · 22/11/2025 16:41

It annoys me too and I’ve started seeing it in novels and articles. Maybe it’s just language changing and we have to get used to it? At least Americans don’t do it.

PistachioTiramisu · 22/11/2025 16:50

Agree - one of my pet hates too! Why do some people say 'I was sat' or 'I was stood'? Doesn't it sound wrong to them? The worst of all though is 'I was laying' (in bed presumably) - or 'I was having a lay-in'.

SeaAndStars · 22/11/2025 16:55

Prince William does this. There is no hope.

RitaIncognita · 22/11/2025 17:19

Indeed, we do not.

Prince William also says things like "This means so much to Catherine and I."

It'll be his sink estate school.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 22/11/2025 17:26

I’m glad it’s not just me 😆

Unless I can get over it, I’ll never know what happened to the missing woman that the protagonist was going to search for. Once she’d stopped being sat on her sofa, of course.

The only creature on earth who is permitted to use this version of the verb is a cat. Preferably a very floofy one with disdainful yellow eyes and very long whiskers.

ExquisiteDresses · 22/11/2025 17:32

I know it's wrong but I like it.

RoamingToaster · 22/11/2025 17:59

Doesn't it sound wrong to them?

It’s the way people speak in parts of the UK so they grow up with that and don’t realise the issue.

Overthemhills · 22/11/2025 19:18

It’s terrible but not as terrible as “we was arguing” and “we was in a bad place” - all over the relationships board.

Timeforabitofpeace · 22/11/2025 19:45

I hate magazine language. Inspo ( inspiration) and Reno (renovation). Ugh.

Namechangedgoblin · 22/11/2025 19:46

I done it.

hate that

Thank you so much. I’ve been on about this for years. Grrr.

he also wears 'trainers' (i.e. training shoes) with suits.

LupaMoonhowl · 25/11/2025 16:05

Utterly ignorant.
When I see ‘I was sat’, I just die a little..’ 😀

GetOverTheEgo · 25/11/2025 16:09

I hate to say that I had to report a minor crime and when the statement came back for my review I had apparently said 'My husband not seen the person what we think done it'.

I was so torn regarding the etiquette of correcting this. (I didn't in the end. They not found the person what done it neither)

It is vernacular usage. Nothing wrong with it.

Gorgeousred · 25/11/2025 16:13

Aaargh it makes me die inside. I couldn't finish such a badly-wrote book like that. 😉

I smiled at this. Would have felt like you.

And I probably wouldn't finish the book.
