Pedants' corner

He's or his, and so many incorrect corrections.

One current thread is about a hoody's bleaching in the washing machine. Many posters questioned the use of 'he's' instead of 'his' in the title (said by some to be a legitimate dialect variation). However, virtually all the posts correcting the title, and those in turn correcting them, themselves have errors. There is even a correction of a correction of a correction with its own error. Pedants' corner gets a mention too.

I blame the autocorrect function on here which makes the most bizarre corrections. ‘I am ILL’ becomes ‘I am I’ll ‘ for example. Try it. It takes a lot of care to find and edit these before posting and many posters don’t manage it. I just ignore the errors .

When I was at primary school, some children at school were from an area where he's was used instead of his. Just because it's dialect doesn't mean it's correct!

Helpmechooseausername · 30/10/2025 08:17

Well, yes, it was annoying. Almost as annoying as the apostrophe in "hoody's"...!

Not just that, but if you correct it sometimes it changes it back again. That can be hard to notice. I have seen posters say the incorrect autocorrect even happened after clicking 'post' on something they had typed correctly.

Surely even if you pronounce it 'he's' it should still be written as 'his'?

Yes! And it randomly adds a full stop here and there then capitalises the next word, but omits the capital letter if you start a new paragraph. Bonkers.

Exactly.

God that thread is driving me crazy, the the number of people correcting the OP and then writing "hoody's"! My eyes!

RainySundayAfternoon · 30/10/2025 08:37

I took one look at the title of that thread and hid it 🤣

Ha, I've seen that thread! I expect the OP has abandoned it in frustration so if you're reading this one, laundry OP, I think the suggestion that your dh is leaning against crumbling plaster at his work could be correct!

Autocorrect on my phone is really annoying. It keeps changing of and if, seemingly at random but sometimes let's actual spelling mistakes slide.

If someone has a dialect where his is pronounced hes and typing that then autocorrect would probably change that to he's. I think mn can be quite unkind in its picking up of errors. Not everyone has English as a first language and plenty if people struggle with spelling. Phone typing is also difficult.

Yes, I'm sure you're right, it should. We need never know how the OP says it. Maybe in completely different context, such as a novel, poem or play, it might be important. I wonder if then 'he's' ("heez") would be the right usage, to distinguish it from 'hes' (which looks like "hezz")?

There are so many of these. Half the site is practically illiterate at the moment. I think AI might have something to do with it.
