In the US I'm afraid the check does come in the post.

LyraSilvertongue · 05/06/2008 11:35

Yup, Americanisms creeping into the language...

allgonebellyup · 12/06/2008 10:56

grim.

Everything spelt with Zs everywhere.

Words like Defense instead of Defence.

Center instead of Centre. It bugs me when English people do it.

Amphibimum · 12/06/2008 10:58

and mom.
why do english people say mom? i want to ask people who do this but havnt worked up the courage yet in case theyre offended. i offended at least 3 poeple yesterday and thats my quota for a good while...

allgonebellyup · 12/06/2008 11:00

Oh lordy, i have seen "mom" on here several times but i always assume it is just American posters.

Luckily havent heard it once in real life, or else the poor person uttering such revolting words would have been swiftly beheaded.

BecauseImWorthIt · 12/06/2008 11:01

People from Birmingham/the Midlands do say mom, though! It's not just an Americanism.

Amphibimum · 12/06/2008 11:06

do they??
oh!
i dont want to behead anyone btw, im just curious...

UnquietDad · 12/06/2008 11:07

"How are you?"
"I'm good."

NO, you are NOT. You are WELL or FINE!!

SummatAndNowt · 12/06/2008 11:08

People with American mothers who've grown up over here often say mom as well.

Amphibimum · 12/06/2008 11:08

but is them saying mom just the way the accent sounds when they are actually saying mum? or have i got the wrong? i didnt think it was spelled any ways other than mum or mam in this country...

PortAndLemon · 12/06/2008 11:08

Yes, my Birmingham-born-and-bred grandmother was always "Mom" to her children.

Amphibimum · 12/06/2008 11:09

that is Allowed summat [gracious)

oops, think i say im good.

PortAndLemon · 12/06/2008 11:09

She always wrote it "Mom" as well.

Amphibimum · 12/06/2008 11:10

"Center instead of Centre. It bugs me when English people do it"

Do you mean British, or does it not bother you when Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish people use Americanisms?

Amphibimum · 12/06/2008 11:29

nope, i assume theyre scottishisms, welshisms or northern irelandisms

[facetious]
