"Welcoming" babies

Why are celebs always "welcoming" their new baby? Did the baby just turn up at the airport? (I suppose in the case of surrogacy maybe it did, but otherwise it does seem to rather understate the process.)

They also “share” babies with their spouse, partner or ex. Like they’re a car or a flat.

StarCourt · 11/09/2025 01:53

yep
i hate both phrases

It's journalese.
My wardrobe/interior/whatever doesn't need to be curated or elevated.
If I wear a bikini/dress, it's not to flaunt my curves.

NorthernGirl1975 · 18/09/2025 08:14

It's really annoying!

Surely you like to showcase your shapely pins by encasing them in figure hugging pants though?

I cut a stylish figure by recycling my wardrobe and complete my look with free flowing tresses? For work I add a pop of colour and inches to my frame with neon sandal heels.

I don't think I'd describe my legs as shapely pins.

I channel my MIL by wearing a dress a bit like one she wore in 1984, when I was age 2, but I add a red lip, a smoky eye and wear a heal.

Ahem… I know you did that last word on purpose! Does anyone know why fashion users the singular for a pair of something? E.g the whole outfit was ruined by an espadrille wedge sandal.

Dilbertian · 20/09/2025 08:09

Well, an outfit would be ruined if you only wore one espadrille wedge sandal with it. Unless you were going for the morning-after-the-night-before look.

Dilbertian · 20/09/2025 08:11

Or maybe the outfit was ruined by what she was doing with the espadrille wedge sandal. Wearing it as a hat? Carrying it as a handbag?

It comes from the fact that several cultures have specific rituals around the birth of a baby to welcome them to the world.

imon · 20/09/2025 09:26

I thought I was the only one who’d noticed this shift in media reporting - I’m not going mad, thank you! It gives me a mental image of mum and dad at the arrivals gate with a ‘welcome home’ sign.

I suppose the alternatives are linguistically too complicated - ‘given birth to’ doesn’t have the same ring.
