Grammatically incorrect car plates

I saw a car yesterday with a registered number plate RU55 EEL all squished together to make one word. I guess the man driving it is named Russell so you'd think he'd be able to spell his own name. Why bother with this poor effort when it's just wrong?

That’s misspelt, not grammatically incorrect
(we are in Pedants’ Corner after all Grin)
But I agree with you!

Pseudo-personalised plates are rather cringeworthy, aren't they?

That's what I mean. If you could really afford a decent one you wouldn't be fooling around with L154 FU X or KE11Y FA.

I quite like RO51, but it’s not my name.

Perhaps it says Russeel on his birth certificate.

Dafter things have happened. I know a Zoie whose parents thought Zoe was spelled like that and registered her as that.

They are not called vanity plates for no reason !

CalzoneOnLegs · 22/08/2025 01:41

When I worked at a college I saw lots of oddly spelled names, Shevorn sticks in my mind

I'll always remember an Yvonne. Pronounced Why-vone-ee.

StrawberryJangle · 22/08/2025 01:47

But I did think, as above that his name might be Russeel. Posher than Rustle innit?

mathanxiety · 22/08/2025 02:22

I saw one a few weeks ago "ANUSTRT". A new start or something else entirely?

mathanxiety · 22/08/2025 02:23

I know a child named Yovonne, spelled the way Yvonne is pronounced in some quarters.

Dontsparethehorses · 22/08/2025 02:49

I knew a Sian pronounced Cyan…

Well, you know it makes sense!

Makes change from Blue.
Which is think sounds a rather sad name.

PendantScorner · 22/08/2025 12:07

I am of two minds with personalised number plates.
The really old ones like FGP 72 or REY 843 are fine.
Something like J16SJC (July16 Stephen John Clarke) is naff but might have been a gift.
RU55EEL - not sure. Probably a bit too conspicuous and looks a poor substitute for RU55ELL.
L4KOP - brilliant

There is one parked a couple of streets away from me that spells the establishment's name - something like Lina's Cafe, car reg L1 NAS, and I think it's great.

@MyDadWasAnArse , your thread title is an arse.

Anus Tart?!

PendantScorner · 22/08/2025 12:29

A few years ago, the DVLC made sure that WA11KER and WA17KER were not available.

Upfartooearly · 22/08/2025 12:36

I’ve regularly see a car with the number plate CLA 55Y. It’s quite a high end make so I imagine they were going for CLASSY but it make me think CLAGGY

BrickBiscuit · 22/08/2025 20:02

Someone in Bristol has BR16 TOL. It's both brilliant and a bit sad they couldn't get the '15'.
