There appear to be more threads appearing daily which contain the above words. Is it misspellings, a trend or just a lack of experience of reading and writing? It puts me off the entire post when I see 2 separate words joined together into one. Loose is of course often used when the poster means lose. Noone is actually supposed to mean Nobody but it looks ridiculous written down.

You forgot alot, which I particularly hate.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 01/08/2025 03:47

‘Loose’ is the one that kills me/instantly judge that person as thick. The others don’t bother me.

LBFseBrom · 01/08/2025 04:26

A plethora of 'theys', 'they'res' and 'thems' instead of him/her, hers/his etc, even when the sex of the person is stated. Some people certainly do buy into the zeitgeist big time and it's very irritating. 'Holiday cards' will no doubt be the next thing.

'We are pregnant' when we all know only one partner can actually be pregnant. Worse still I came across, "When we was pregnant", the other day.

Couldn't of......

Capital letters mid sentence, as if speaking in headlines, eg "What are You doing Today? The Sun is Shining".

ChocolateMagnum · 01/08/2025 04:29

I'm starting to hate misspellings etc. far less than I used to because they're a very good sign the person hasn't c&p from AI!!!

Or 'no one'.

Its close relative ‘none-event’ is one I irrationally find especially irritating.

I find that autocorrect is offering choices which are odd—such as a hyphen where no hyphen should exist. So as I am spell checking and trying to fix typos the entire system is offering to correct me incorrectly rather than simply flagging my misspelling.

I’m more interested in where you found that em dash. I don’t seem to have one on my keyboard. Mind you, I’ve never looked it up online or anything.

pikkumyy77 · 01/08/2025 12:13

Isn’t it just a minus sign? Its just on the keyboard.

The minus sign is an en dash on mine.

Bbq1 · 01/08/2025 16:18

@BrickBiscuit
No idea where that dash came from. I didn't even intend to add it!

Autocorrect and fat-fingering is the curse of pedants everywhere. Your computer can make you look ungrammatical despite your best intentions. Several posters have said their device autocorrected back even after they amended its mistake!

soupyspoon · 01/08/2025 18:50

Peter Noone

And I see your noone and loose and raise you.... rest bite.

Yes, I hate autocorrect, wish I could turn it off. I try to proofread before posting but odd things do still get through at times and on here you can only alter your post for a short time.

I too thought of Peter Noone:-).

Rest bite is a good one, escaped goat another.

CatsLikeBoxes · 01/08/2025 19:02

I really hate loose when it should be lose. I feel compelled to read it as loose in my head, so I even annoy myself.
Exasperated instead of exacerbated.
There was another one which I was going to mention but it has completely vanished from my head.

CatsLikeBoxes · 01/08/2025 19:04

Oh - using lightening instead of lightning. Again, as I read it, I can't stop myself reading it as lightening in my head.

Reallybadidea · 01/08/2025 19:08

Infact and incase are everywhere now but they're not as bad as abit. I recently had a builder say he'd come over to have alook before quoting. Where has this epidemic of putting random words together come from?

Bbq1 · 01/08/2025 19:45

Ah yes, rest bite. Does anybody else ever get pictures in their head as when they come across a malapropism? With 'loose weight' I either imagine fat hanging off a body or a figure running wildly across a field (loose as in set free) With rest bite I imagine a huge set of teeth lying on a bed!
