I noticed that most people do pronounce NHS correctly and yet the same people will say haitch for HR. Why?

Idk, I’ve never heard anyone say HR with a haitch. Is it a regional thing?

Borrowed consonant, perhaps? The ‘En’ in NHS provides a hard start for the aitch. However it doesn’t need a consonant, and aitch-R should not have one, as you rightly point out.

Haven't you? That’s interesting, I hear it quite often. I’m in the South West. 🤔

Heard it twice in the office yesterday, people talking about HR, which prompted me to post about it as I realised it’s something I’ve noticed before.

How do you pronounce H from Steps?

ElixirOfLife · 24/07/2025 09:35

Aitch

But I assume the people I’m talking about would say haitch. 🤷‍♀️

South West? Bristol? Where an idea is an 'ideal' and asking where something is is couched in the format 'Where's that to?'
Anything goes. I live in Bristol and love it here but certain colloquialisms definitely make me smile!
