It's loth to do it, not "loath" or "loathe".

It's accept something, not "except" it.

It's affect the outcome, not "effect" it.

It's publicly, not "publically".

It's never mind (two words), not "nevermind" (pace Nirvana).

It's liaison, not "liason".

Any more (not "anymore") ?

lol at "vagina and vulva gets all mixed up as well." That's childbirth for you.

sakurarose39 · 27/05/2008 13:13

aaargh - give ADVICE....

UnquietDad · 27/05/2008 13:29

I think, technically, counsellors aren't actually allowed to give advice, are they? I know someone who went on a counselling course once and she said this is the most common misconception about them. All they do is present the options clearly in order for you to make the decision.

Oh ffs, I spelt counsellor wrong as well, didn't I? Its late here, and I've have a long day...being a proof reader!
Yeah well they give "counsel", then...

nickytwotimes · 27/05/2008 14:05

Two of my friends say and write 'pacific' instead of 'specific'. I kid you not.

SixSpotBurnet · 27/05/2008 14:15

WendyWeber - .

Ellbell · 27/05/2008 14:20

Ooh, I've just got one (c/o the essay I'm marking...)

primarily means 'principally', not 'first'... As in, 'I will primarily discuss... before moving on to analyse...'. Aaargh!

Ellbell · 27/05/2008 14:23

Also had (this is just from today's crop)

'X is not adverse to...'

'In his novel, X affronts the theme of Y'

Oh, and don't get me started on consequently versus subsequently.

Had better stop or it might be never-ending...

Iklboo · 27/05/2008 14:26

Woman I work with:

"Can I pacifically talk to his sekkiterry (secretary)"

She also says 'chimley', 'draclia' (dracula)

BeauLocks · 27/05/2008 14:32

Sounds like my sekkiterry Iklboo!

Our chat this morning went something like this (long running saga involving her son and the fact that she thinks he's stealing from her):

Me: "How was your weekend? Did you ask your son about the money"

Sekkiterry: "I pacifically arksed him what he done with it and I told him that I wasn't nobody's fool"

Me:

Ellbell · 27/05/2008 15:37

'The story is narrated from the prospective of X, the main character...'

chunkychips · 27/05/2008 15:42

iklboo: your woman sounds hilarious, how does chimley and draclia come into your everyday conversation?! I also like skelington and ambliance (ambulance)

fluffyanimal · 27/05/2008 15:45

Ellbell, do you ever wonder if they've learnt anything you've taught them? I'm in the thick of marking too. Soul destroying!

DontCallMeBaby · 27/05/2008 15:52

"Wide birth". Makes me fume with pedantry AND want to cross my legs.

IdrisTheDragon · 27/05/2008 15:54

alright instead of all right

JackieNo · 27/05/2008 15:57

'irregardless'

tearinghairout · 27/05/2008 16:01

'Chimbley' is Westcountry. I remember having to listen to a very long story about someone's problems with their chimbley & finding it hard to keep a straight face.

St Delia of Smith talks about basalmic vinegar.

What about place names - Edin-burra anyone?

ShowOfHands · 27/05/2008 16:02

discreet vs discrete
etc not ect

BeauLocks · 27/05/2008 16:03

Ooh, ooh, yes - "ect" is one of my pet hates!

ShowOfHands · 27/05/2008 16:05

I hadn't encountered it until MN and it makes my teeth itch.

JackieNo · 27/05/2008 16:10

'Marshmellow'. Grrr.

MargaretMountford · 27/05/2008 16:12

turning around gets me, 'so I turned around and said...'

UnquietDad · 27/05/2008 16:15

Iklboo - your colleague sounds like a fan of the Steve Wright Show of old. "Bring an ambleyance! And be sure it is equipped with a spatchleyer!"

Another one which irritates the hell out of me. If you are so determined to be the kind of pushy parent who starts asking when your child is 3 how to get them into grammar school, make sure you know it is grammar school and not fucking "grammer"! People who can't spell it shouldn't be allowed to get their kids a place there.

SixSpotBurnet · 27/05/2008 16:16

tearinghairout - so how does one pronounce Edinburgh?

3andnomore · 27/05/2008 16:19

if english was a phonetic language you wouldn't have so many opportunities to spell things wrong....

reading through the thread I started wondering just how many people I annoy every time I post on mn, lol...spelling and grammar aren't my strongpoints....
