Just needed to get that out after seeing rest bite in yet another post.

Surely nobody is that stupid? Could it be someone who speaks English as a second language?

supercatlady · 27/05/2025 15:16

Nope, not every time, it’s used a lot. So much so we had it as a hidden “tag” when designing a website.

cantthinkofausername26 · 27/05/2025 15:17

This drives me insane!

RobinHeartella · 27/05/2025 15:18

Ah but sometimes you just need a little bite of rest.

Just like sometimes your rear is dire

You obviously don't get out much! (Or indeed use Nextdoor). People really are that stupid.

Clockpic · 27/05/2025 15:19

I haven't heard it, but actually it makes a lot of sense. A bite sized rest 😂

LoveTheLake525 · 27/05/2025 15:20

It always makes me smile!!

if people need respite, I can't get upset at their mistake & rest bite is kinda funny. A bite of rest 🤣

It's the very least of my issues on 'Nextdoor' 🤣

VimFuego101 · 27/05/2025 15:21

It always makes me think of people taking a break to have a snack 😀

myplace · 27/05/2025 15:22

People who don’t read a lot. They simply don’t see words before using them.

Many people do very little writing- certainly not formal writing- these days. Using a forum may be the most reading and writing they do.

What a lovely eggcorn!

Well indeed!

restbite · 27/05/2025 15:28

yeah, I need a rest AND a bite!😂

KitsyWitsy · 27/05/2025 15:28

I have three autistic boys so I have heard this phrase a lot. Feel my pain!

TurquoiseDress · 27/05/2025 15:29

This one always makes me smile! Grin

This is what it means in our house! We've adopted it at home to specifically mean a small rest to have a snack 😂😂

BristolDolly22 · 27/05/2025 15:32

It kind of makes sense doesn’t it?
but it does drive me mad…I actually work with SEN teens and saw it written as rest bite in a professional report the other week. I was astonished!

ILoveBrum · 27/05/2025 15:41

Hopefully you corrected it @BristolDolly22?!

BristolDolly22 · 27/05/2025 15:50

i did sort of nicely pointed it out, yes…wasn’t really within my role to be making actual corrections.

No. I know someone in their 40s, better schooling than I had, who thought it was 'rest bite' as in they could grab a bite of rest.

RabbitsRock · 27/05/2025 15:54

Drives me potty! DSIL writes it & I itch to correct her! She also uses “ supposably” instead of supposedly!

smellyhouseelf · 27/05/2025 16:02

The problem is, people only know what they know. Acting like people are stupid or beneath you because they haven't learned the same information you have, is just plain nasty. I know and have always understood it to be respite, but 'a bite of rest' also makes sense.

I have a friend who is hard of hearing. She often mispronounces or misunderstands things, and at 42 is still learning new words when she sees them written down for the first time. She is highly intelligent.

But how is it possible to get to your 40s and have never seen the word written?

Edited

Some people literally don't read anything more than text messages and maybe short captions alongside videos. Tabloids avoid using words the average eight-year-old doesn't understand.

When I'm being charitable I try to think maybe their logic is a rest and a bite [to eat].

I used to work on a respite unit and the amount of times I picked up a care plan or a written report where professionals had written rest bite used to blow my mind!! It annoys me so much!
