Pedants' corner

I am contemplating giving up pedantry...

...it's bad for my health. Last week, in addition to the usual stresses of commuting, I had to listen repeatedly to some pre-recorded moron say: "From 18th May South West Trains will be running a new timetable. New copies of the timetable are available at all stations." (Clearly they are not "new copies"....they are copies of the new timetable)

When it starts to bug you this much I do wonder if it's just time to quit.

Pedants' corner isn't intended to pick up on MN posts IMO. The kinds of things that come up relate to printed, offical or commercial text. These people tend to go on about their quality and strive for perfection - sometimes that's not apparent in their spelling and grammar.
My instant messages to DH are shocking in their spelling and grammar - typos and missed apostrophes because it's quicker. My MN posts are quickly typed and rarely proofread, but they don't tend to be dreadful unless I'm breastfeeding and typing one handed. My emails to close colleagues and my boss are typed 2 handed, quickly scanned before sending but not proofread to within an inch of their life. Emails to more distant colleagues / clients are more thoroughly proofread before sending.

Can someone please explain to me why I have started getting two/to/too mixed up? I don't think I've had a problem with them since about the age of 6.

Haven't read this thread yet but I have another example of train-related pedantry to add.

Our station has just installed new electronic destination boards, and one of them - just one of them, making it even more annoying ? says 'This train terimantes here'. For my own sanity, I really need to complain about it, don't I?

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2008 08:49

Well it depends - is a terimante a kind of dance? That might be fun to watch?

Oh dear - I go away from the corner for a couple of days, and when I come back I find a small war has broken out!

Pedantry is an addiction. It is definitely a social disability (who else on here was "Billy no mates" at school?), and it's really bad for your health as hatwoman noted in the OP. But in small corners and crevices of the internet, pedants gather to share their obsession in a safe, anonymous and welcoming environment.

I try not to let my pedantry show too much in social situations, so pedants corner is a welcome release for my pent-up pedantry. I feel safe here. LBDD, you're making me nervous.

SPB - I am unable to spot where you got confused - but I do have an answer to your question - a very simple one - it's because you're on a pedant thread. It's a rule - you make an extra effort to proof your threads because you're in pedants' corner, but you still press post before spotting that you've done something ridiculous with prepositions or apostrophes. 'tis the law.

Sorry, hatwoman, that was in general. Although I do find myself making stupid errors in Pedants' Corner, however the 6th or 7th proofread usually gets them
I was seinding an email at work yesterday to 2 colleagues and I referred to "you too". Why, when I know it's wrong? It's not a typo - 'w' and 'o' are miles apart!
