I really lucked out today!

Means something good and lucky happened. Would you not agree?

A few times on here I’ve seen it used to mean bad luck or out of luck. But it’s not a use I hear in real life.

Is this another regional quirk? Or just a common mistake? It’s quite important as it does change the meaning to the complete opposite.

To me it means the opposite but I know I'm wrong as I only hear it as getting lucky nowadays. I think it used to mean the opposite and it's changed over the years. Lucked out definitely meant missing out/unlucky back in the day.

logicisall · 15/03/2025 13:36

It's always meant to lose out on something so I've presumed that it was being used incorrectly as eg in 'I could care less".

I have always heard “lucked out” to mean “I was lucky.” I have never seen it used to mean “out of luck.”

I have always heard “lucked out” to mean “I was lucky.” I have never seen it used to mean “out of luck.”

Same, where I grew up 'a bit of a touch' was the more usual parlance, but lucked out definitely meant something fortunate had happened.

Definitely positive for me, and really should be in an unusual way, something positive unexpectedly landed at your feet.

I suppose I can see the logic of being 'out of luck' but I think that is a misunderstanding.

MyUmberSeal · 15/03/2025 14:04

When something good happens ‘you luck in’, when something shit happens ‘you luck out’. I don’t get why people think that lucking out is a good thing.

olympicsrock · 15/03/2025 14:07

I have always heard ‘I lucked out’ as a good thing. It means to have had amazingly good luck to me .
However I am all lucked out means to be out of good luck.

Oldermum84 · 15/03/2025 14:15

I've always used it as meaning I've been extremely lucky.

HappyHippyChick · 15/03/2025 14:20

Another vote for I’ve been very lucky

MightyBust · 15/03/2025 14:22

Another vote for being lucky.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 15/03/2025 14:24

Another vote for 'lucking out' meaning 'maximising your luck' and it therefore being a good thing. It is very American though, as a saying, and I think a lot of people use it the other way (possibly through not really thinking about it).
