Read this today on a post. It followed a statement by the person who wrote it. Seems to me they wanted agreement. So why write "no?" instead of yes?

In fact I can't stand the statement followed by no? yes? right? at all. Annoying!

I see what you mean, ending a statement with "no?", "yes?", or "right?" can feel like the writer is fishing for agreement or subtly pressuring into confirming their viewpoint. Instead of inviting open discussion, it can come across as rhetorical or even a bit manipulative.

"No?" in particular can be especially grating because it assumes the reader agrees, challenging them to disagree. It’s like saying, "Surely you see it my way?" rather than simply stating an opinion and allowing space for a genuine response.

Isn't "No?" just shorthand for "is it not?" Which is shorthand for "is it not the case?"
