Just that really.
Why do people say things like 'oh, there was only a few slithers of meat on my plate'?
They clearly means Slivers. Very small slim skinny pieces. Not slithers, which is is a verb to describe the movement of a snake?
It seems loads of people do it.
How can stop this abomination? 🤣

@ExitPursuedByAPolarBear why do you agree that it's bad form to correct mispronunciation? Unless you mean 'it's widely held to be bad form, but I don't think it should be?'

It leads to mistakes, which is what this thread is about. Is there a genuine reason not to correct and thus increase knowledge, other than the slight chance you might hurt someone's feelings a bit?

I think it's incredibly rude to correct someone's pronunciation (or indeed their spelling and grammar) unless that person is your pupil or your child. That is why this little corner of Mumsnet exists. People can have a bit of a moan without actually being a complete dick to someone.

Always wondered why this one is so widespread. I see it regularly in books, and people on TV seem to say it a lot. I've heard it at least once on a cooking programme and iirc also twice in a single episode of The Repair Shop, from two different presenters.
