'works Christmas do'

Does this term not drive anyone else crazy- it seems to have become ubiquitous? Surely it's either 'my work Christmas do' or 'my work's Christmas do'? These days people don't even seem to say 'my', it's just 'I been out at works Xmas do...'

If you can have a work do then I don't see why you can't have a works do, where the works is another name for a factory or manufacturing facility. But if you work in an office in a service industry for example, you can have a work do but not a works do.

THANK YOU!
Drives me bloody bonkers.

Yeah that's true in theory but that's never what they are referring to!

I feel like it's never been picked up on despite it being nearly as common (at this time of year) as the old 'chester draws' or 'would of could of' errors!

Oh god YES. Same as 'works van'.
I hate it!!

I always thought it was 'works' plural as @ISeriouslyDoubtIt describes it for a factory or gas works etc. Would that use require an apostrophe?

I don't think it does necessarily, because you can have a work do with no apostrophe, so it follows that you can have a works do with no apostrophe.

It annoys me but what annoys me more is when people say they are going on a 'doo' - work doo, hen doo etc.

Do you mean they write it like that, or say it with a long 'oo' sound? Either way is very strange indeed.

Years ago people used to work at "the gas works" or similar. "Works" is an acceptable word to describe an office situation, a factory etc.

Yeah in that sense it's fine but that's clearly not how it's being used the majority of the time someone says 'works Christmas do' (or doo!).
