Relative is in hospital and has been very poorly but fully expected to recover. I'm looking for a light-hearted book that is genuinely funny and might appeal to a person who enjoys language and picks up on any errors!
Does anyone know of a good read? I am looking for something quite cheerful and funny. I think something like this could help my relative get a little of their old spark back when feeling up to reading. It's hard choosing a good book for other people but this is a subject we often joke about.

Notes on a Small Island by Bill Bryson, Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons or browse the humour section at Waterstones. They usually have a great selection.

I came here to say Cold Comfort Farm too!

Three men in a boat
Gerald Durrell's books

The Great Shark Hunt by Hunter S Thompson. It’s a collection of some of his articles so not too overwhelming but incredibly engaging.

Cooking with Fernet Branca, by James Hamilton-Paterson

Terry Pratchett is my go to.

Have just read 'Diary of a Somebody' by Brian Bilston which is funny and full of word plays and puns.

Given you’ve asked about language errors, Gyles Brandreth has written a few that might fit your bill. Have You Eaten Grandma? is one example.

Not sure if you’re looking for books specifically about language (given this is posted in Pedants’ Corner) or just well written funny books on which case I agree with many of the previous recommendations!

What did you get in the end? Hope they are ok now.

Confederacy of Dunces. Always has me guffawing.

This book is in my wishlist .
David Sedaris' books of essays and short stories are good - funny , well written and sometimes painfully honest .

Free Country George Mahood. Funny and also heartwarming to read of the kindness of strangers. His other books are good too.

My favourite book by a quite considerable margin.

Thank you for all these suggestions, I'm going to go through them all. Relative more poorly than thought and reading just wouldn't be an option. Hopefully on the way to recovery now though so I'm thinking to get something in the next few weeks.

Would an audiobook be an option? It can be quite comforting to listen to? Hope your relative is better soon.

If you like history, then David Mitchell’s ‘Unruly’ is an entertaining and informative read.

Does your relative have a smartphone and a local library?

BorrowBox is a free app for digital books and - more importantly - audiobooks via a local library. I’ve had a number of PG Wodehouse and James Herriot audiobooks for free through it.

It’s very easy once installed. When listening, you can press an option for it to only play for a set amount from 10 minutes to an hour. My Dad found this handy in hospital so he wouldn’t drift off and miss it, he could just set it to play for 15 minutes at a time as needed.
