Scone: Rhymes with gone or phone?

I understood that the former was the "refined" way of saying it although many believe that it's the latter.

Well we say it to rhyme with phone. Of course if you are really common 'rock cake' works as well

I say it like gone too.

Though I don't think I've heard anyone in RL call it a scone like phone.

bristols · 24/04/2008 20:51

Gone for this household.

fatzak · 24/04/2008 20:53

"Phone" here

3boys1cat · 24/04/2008 20:53

I would rhyme it with gone. My Dad, though, used to say it like "scoon" - he liked to be different, and I think that's how the place in Scotland with the same name is pronounced!

Milliways · 24/04/2008 20:53

Like a phone, unless you are my Northener DH who insists is it like Gone!

My friend says "Patio" like you say "Ratio"!!

OsmosisBanana · 24/04/2008 20:55

Gone.

I had a friend who used to say theatre odd. With all the stress on the middle syllable. Drove me wild.

Not nearly as wild as the way she used to say turqiouse thogh. Makes me shudder.

katyt1 · 24/04/2008 20:55

Gone

OsmosisBanana · 24/04/2008 20:55

oddly. Not odd.

orangehead · 24/04/2008 20:55

I have always rhymed it with phone, but DP says that is poncey and pretentious.
I always thought "gone" was the poncier (prob because my mum's Hyacinth Bucket-esque friend said it like that), but DP is posher than me, so I s'pose I should defer to his superior knowledge on these matters...

And while were at it, the cream goes on first, then the jam.

PotPourri · 24/04/2008 20:58

Definately 'gone'. Phone just sounds weird...

RipMacWinkle · 24/04/2008 20:58

3boys - you're right about the place name. But that's just to confuse the matter further

squeaver · 24/04/2008 21:00

Gone = Scotland

Phone = England

IME

evenhope · 24/04/2008 21:00

phone

boogiewoogie · 24/04/2008 21:00

Philip Howard from the Times said it was the former too and isn't he the words expert or something like that

KerryMum - you're american????

You learn something new every day. I suppose I always guessed you were Irish. Pictured you like Mrs Doyle.

RosaLuxembourg · 24/04/2008 21:00

Phone. That is how we pronounce it in Ireland. And we make the best ones.

OverMyDeadBody · 24/04/2008 21:00

Gone

Ceolas · 24/04/2008 21:00

Gone. Definitely.
