Pedants' corner

These words do not rhyme and I object to them pretending to.

Laugh and Scarf
Roar and Paw

every flipping night i read stories to DS that contain these words and get mightily pissed off.

yes, I know there are difference dialects and accents and people pronounce words differently but FGS if you are going to write a rhyming poem or story you have to realize that not everyone speaks like you.

but I prefer Mrs Badger's explanation, lol

asicsgirl · 24/04/2008 11:44

of course it could also be that they were both pronounced differently, e.g. as 'ay' (to rhyme with 'hay'). I really should go and look this up.

I get annoyed with one book I read that rhymes again with strain - because I have usually got past again before I realise the rhyme at the end of the line and realise I have said agen rather than agayn.

The kids don't seem to notice it - but it really grates on me.

asicsgirl · 24/04/2008 13:09

Throckenholt, we've got one of those:

'He knew exactly what to go for
And scrambled underneath the sofa'

I could bang on about stressed/ unstressed vowels here but... IMHO this shows that writers don't read their own work aloud!

branflake81 · 24/04/2008 15:24

I think I know what book you're reading...is it about new shoes? If so I had the same problem!

asicsgirl · 24/04/2008 15:43

Are you talking to me?

If so, no, it's about a smelly dog!
