Why for the love of GOD do people use these words instead of "me" or "you"?!

It makes me cringe.

It's such a telephone sales thing to do.
They must think it sounds more formal.
On a level with using 'and I' in the wrong way.

I work for a bank and quality check colleague calls and some of them do this all the time! It drives me mad and I constantly give feedback but they must think it sounds good! I think it sounds awful!!

prettycolours · 19/10/2024 13:31

I am noticing this more and more and it drives me mad as well. It seems to be particularly prevalent in work emails, with lots of "yourselves" and "myself".

The use of "yourselves"/"yourself" I suspect is because they think it sounds more formal than just saying "you" ("once I hear back from yourselves" etc). But it's still completely wrong! I hate it.

Where I live I can think of “yourself” easily popping up in conversation. Not sure if this is just local or normal in other places.

Bump into a friend in the street
friend says “how are you? / how’re you doing?”
I reply “grand thanks. Yourself?”

does that count? 🤔

Seymour5 · 20/02/2025 06:39

Why do people start sentences with ‘myself’? I regularly see it here, as in ‘Myself and (insert whoever) are going on holiday/buying a house/getting married’ etc., etc.

Makes my teeth itch, almost as much as ‘could of’.

No that’s not annoying in the same way. I see that as being short for ‘how are you in yourself?’- which is fine.
’Myself and John’ is so annoying because people seem to do it as they think it’s politer or more correct but it’s just wrong.

BeCosyLion · 20/02/2025 07:04

I’m not perfect with grammar by any stretch, but I absolutely hate this and I’m forever correcting it in the writing of juniors at work. I work in a professional environment and I suspect they think it sounds more formal, especially when they hear senior people doing it too.

There is a place for myself / yourself when it’s reflexive, but “myself and my husband went..” or “if you have a question contact myself..” are just plain wrong. “Could of” is also everywhere now and I hate it.

I wonder if you're in Ireland like myself Grin
I've been thinking maybe that's where it has come from, we would say "have you heard from herself?" etc. but that doesn't explain why it's happening in other parts of the world!

If you're in Ireland it's a widespread feature of hiberno-English.

Yourself as an emphatic pronoun: How about yourself? 'Tis herself! Look at himself over there etc, are forms based on Irish language equivalents which don't exist in standard English.

000EverybodyLovesTheSunshine000 · 20/02/2025 07:28

@belleager if you're Irish then you're fine. Crack on.

You may also say "haitch" instead of "aitch"

But if you're English then I am judging you. Harshly.
