Apostrophe when abbreviating a name?

I have a colleague who insists on abbreviating my name in emails (without permission, I might add) and then adding an apostrophe!

So Samantha would become Sam'.

I am wrong to be irritated, even if he is technically in the right?

He's wrong, surely?

He's not technically right. He's just irritating. (Technically, a period (.) is used to denote an abbreviation.)

squeaver · 23/04/2008 14:48

Why is he technically right?

whitesheep · 23/04/2008 14:50

Of course he's not right!! WHAT AM I THINKING?

Thanks you lot. I love it here.

Is he technically in the right though? I thought using apostrophes for abbreviations (like 'phone, for example) was obsolete anyway?

apostrophes don't apply to names as they are familiar versions of the name (in their own right) not shortened names - IMO
