To be/ing why are they being dropped so frequently?

I have noticed- probably in the last year or two, that people construct sentences missing out ‘to be’ or ‘ing’.

For example “This needs done”, instead of “This needs to be done” or “This needs doing”.

I’ve seen so many examples, I know it can’t be typos.

Anyone else seen it too?

Perhaps people are writing the way that they speak.

If you only mean this specific usage with 'needs', that's a legitimate regional variant, in some parts of the UK and US.
I don't think 'needs done' is any less illogical, linguistically speaking, than 'needs doing' (although I would say the latter).

Which regions? Why is this only appearing recently?

It's common in Scotland.

It’s illogical to use the past tense ‘something has been done’, in combination with something to come in the future. ‘This needs to be different’.

I'm in the South OP and it's not a regional variant here, but I often see "needs gone" in posts where someone is trying to sell or give away something. I find it irrationally irritating.

This has been happening for years, particularly on Facebook. It's just a fashionable contraction, plus, as others have said, regional in some cases.

Edited

The 'done' bit is from the passive, though, not the past tense.

Stupidly fashionable on Facebook (SFOF)

It's not recent.

(That's a US-focused article, but there's a reference in there about its use in Scottish and Hiberno-English)

I was married to a Scot (western Scotland) and he and his entire family spoke like this. It sounded odd at first, but I got used to it. I don't mind regional speech like this, it's actually quite endearing.

It's the dropping of the 'ing' from the end of the word 'text' that drives me to socially acceptable levels of rage.

Thank you for this article- but how it grates! All those examples! Argh!

I keep asking my dh if he's 'going gym' or 'going shop'. I don't know WTF is wrong with me!

BarbaraHoward · 13/10/2024 14:22

Not new, always been in use in parts of Ireland and Scotland at least.

I used to work with a woman from NI who did this.
