What fresh hell is this and why am I suddenly seeing this everywhere?

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 22/09/2024 09:27

Is it fresh? It was quite common in speech when I was growing up in the southeast of England. And I don't think it's a new phenomenon for people to write on SM more like how they'd talk than how they'd write in other media.

Probably all you can do (apart from venting on hereGrin) is model correct usage.

AmICrazyToEvenBother · 22/09/2024 12:25

I'm also in the S/E but don't recall hearing it before!

notgettinganyyounger · 22/09/2024 12:51

Only recently started hearing this too. Awful.

JulianFawcettMP · 22/09/2024 12:59

Could not agree more, I hate it. Also I done 🤮

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 22/09/2024 13:04

It's a kiddy thing, isn't it? Like using borrowed instead of lent or 'I brought' instead of 'I bought'? Teens? I'm from the SE and haven't really heard it. Or maybe just ignorance, like 'I was sat'.

KnickerlessParsons · 22/09/2024 13:31

It was very common in S Wales when I was growing up:
•I seen him in school today
•I seen that film already

Also been:
•I been shopping
•I been ill

Malvala · 22/09/2024 13:32

Yep used in Dublin too.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/09/2024 13:41

As annoying as 'needs gone' 🤯

abbey44 · 22/09/2024 13:49

See also “has went”…

MountUnpleasant · 22/09/2024 13:53

I agree. I don't think it's new but it's awful.

@LadyMonicaBaddingham

i don't know why, that always makes me smile.

i also like 'I was sat'. I think it indicates more than sitting which seems more relaxing

i seed/I been - just no.

This one but I can never remember/think of an example to illustrate this to other people 😬. Can you give one please? Or anyone?

tobee · 22/09/2024 13:56

Ah but what about "I was sat sitting" @ThirstyThursday?

Funnywonder · 22/09/2024 15:10

It's very common in NI. I'm 57 and loads of kids said it when I was growing up, so it's definitely not new. I've never said it in my life though. It bugs the hell out of me, but correction is limited to my offspring. Everyone else can say what they like (but I might inwardly judge them just a little bit😆)

HauntedbyMagpies · 22/09/2024 15:14

My ex used to speak like this (he was from the north west) and it drove me round the bloody bend! I used to correct him each and every time.

Another ex used to say "He's" instead of his 🤬 "I'm going to help him with he's garden" 🤬

HauntedbyMagpies · 22/09/2024 15:17

@KnickerlessParsons Also I been shopping I been ill

Yes but they should be "I've been shopping" & "I've been ill"

Drivingoverlemons · 22/09/2024 15:22

It’s common where I grew up but still, they wouldn’t have been allowed to write it at school.

“I/he/she text” instead of texted is my personal bugbear.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 22/09/2024 15:24

It's always been pretty common imo. It's grammatically the same mistake (using the past participle, without an auxiliary verb, instead of using the preterite/simple past) as 'I done', which is also very common. And it's kind of the opposite to 'has went' (using the preterite/simple past as though it's a past participle- i.e. using an auxiliary verb with it)! In some ways it's an understandable mistake, in that with the majority verbs the preterite and the past participle are identical.

BebbanburgIsMine · 22/09/2024 15:43

It's very common here in NE Scotland too.

I hate it!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/09/2024 15:57

Awful but not new. I'm in south London.

Same irritation as 'going Tesco'.

MerryMarys · 22/09/2024 16:17

“I/he/she text” instead of texted is my personal bugbear.

I hate that too. If you're talking about the past, surely it's "I texted" Confused

MerryMarys · 22/09/2024 16:18

Unless you're talking about the present or future tense - "I'll text later"

BarbaraHoward · 22/09/2024 16:22

Every second thread in this section these days is just people who are seemingly completely unaware of regional colloquialisms. Confused

TheChippendenSpook · 22/09/2024 16:24

Been for being is another one.

'I'm not going to have some chocolate, I'm been good!'

Just wrong.

I don’t think this is a regional colloquialism, though. Or if so, it’s very un-regional, because I distinctly remember it coming up in an LM Montgomery novel, set in Canada before WWI, as something one of the characters reproaches herself with as an error of grammar.
