I hate seeing this used unless it really is

Well that's incredibly boring.

The worst offender is the King, whenever he writes , whatever it is he is writing about, there will be an incredible in there somewhere.

ncforcatquestion · 09/09/2024 03:09

I think people don't take it as literally as I do

No worse than "unbelievable", "awesome", "marvellous", "wonderful", "unforgettable", "exceptional", and many other similar words. They have all lost their power through overuse.

And yes I do overuse them too!

MoleAtTheCounter · 09/09/2024 09:26

I dislike hyperbole: the one use that annoys me more than any of the above is rating an effort with a percentage above 100% - "the lad gave 110% tonight".

irritatingsituation · 09/09/2024 09:36

Yep, everything is incredible and amazing these days. It's very tedious.

And every agrees 100% rather than absolutely or completely. Or sometimes 1000%, just to make it really hyperbolic.

I don't mind ie wonderful. But incredible to me literally means something is not credible. It should be sparsely used. Annoys me so much

Radio 4's sometime programme 'Dead Ringers' has a nice time taking the mickey out of the "110%, Gary" stuff.
