One word or two?

The former just looks wrong to me!

that's because it is wrong

any more

two words

ChipButty · 18/04/2008 19:50

Definitely two words.

PuppyMonkey · 18/04/2008 19:54

Hooray. But why do so many people - including newspapers and TV subtitle people etc - think it is ONE? Drives me mad.

OP posts:
SquonkTheBeerGuru · 18/04/2008 19:55

because they are numpties.

PuppyMonkey · 18/04/2008 20:01

I thought so

I love the word numpties.

MsHighwater · 19/04/2008 00:45

It's actually both depending on context. "Anymore" is quite correct.

"I don't smoke anymore" or
"I'm not going to buy any more cigarettes"

definition of "anymore" here

MsHighwater · 19/04/2008 00:54

OK so it's American in origin but still...

RoxyNotFoxy · 19/04/2008 10:34

"Anymore" just refers to whether something is continuing - as in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" - whereas "any more" refers to an amount of stuff. "Is there any more tea?"

castille · 19/04/2008 10:42

Two words. I'd never write anymore, in either context. It looks wrong to me. Is anymore American then?

WanderingTrolley · 19/04/2008 10:46

MsH is right - it has morphed into one word.

As an old bat traditionalist, I use 'any more' but an interesting point is made here regarding a difference in meaning.

ellingwoman · 19/04/2008 11:29

My fave English site

Each word has a page of it's own. The misspelled word has a picture of a donkey beside it and the correct one has an owl.

WanderingTrolley · 19/04/2008 11:31

What about errant apostrophes, ew?

Sorry, couldn't resist!

ellingwoman · 19/04/2008 11:58

Damn!!!

I looked up 'misspelled' to make sure I'd got THAT right and didn't notice the apostrophe!

PuppyMonkey · 19/04/2008 12:38

So are there any more differing opinions?

Or isn't anyone posting anymore?

Is that it then? Is it? Is it?

Still don't like it and refuse to use it. And I won't be buying the book Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore just on principle. Or is it principal?
