We was talking in the phone.....
We was sitting on the settee....

WHY?????

Surely it should be we WERE talking on the phone? We WERE sitting on the settee.

i'm with you on this but expect posters below to say it is acceptable dialect.

PetrichorSoul · 16/08/2024 16:04

We was sat …

NO.

Dobest · 16/08/2024 16:05

We was stood there, standing.

KnickerlessParsons · 16/08/2024 16:08

We was sat sitting....

PedantScorner · 16/08/2024 16:11

Was you?

HansHolbein · 16/08/2024 16:17

What about… I seen 🤢

Greigeisthelatestbeige · 16/08/2024 16:19

Agree OP.

There is another similar one ‘need gone’ and one where the present and past sense are used together. Can’t think of an example but it’s in every thread, it is something like ‘not needing new’.

invisiblecat · 16/08/2024 16:38

Anyone would think that they don't teach this sort of thing at school any more.

Soshu · 16/08/2024 16:40

A guy I used to manage at work spoke like this, along with the glottal stop. Hated listening to gkm
speak

Caraxes · 16/08/2024 16:53

I would never make this mistake in writing, but do occasionally use it in speech. If other people do it I notice straight away and it just sounds wrong, but I'm aware I have sometimes slipped into it myself.

In my defence, I think it is a local accent/dialect thing (London), it very much depends who I'm talking to and about what, and sounds more like: "we wz gnner go to TescOzz, but went dahn ter Sainsbury's instead cuz it's quicker" 😄 95% of the time I have a pretty neutral south east accent, but ranting to my mum about e.g. them bloody tempry lights at Tescos agen really brings the Lundn out've me!

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/08/2024 16:55

It's an accent that I find particularly jarring.

How many grammar Police

does it take to change a lightbulb?

Too

LittleGreenDuck · 16/08/2024 17:18

It's definitely a regional thing. My mum is from London / Kent borders, is otherwise very articulate, but often says "We was" or "where was we when..?" Sounds really odd!

Tralalaka · 16/08/2024 17:36

I’m London have never said it and neither have my family or friends. It’s really jars me

AcceptanceElephant · 16/08/2024 17:39

O god yes!!! I’m not usually fussed but it’s definitely not an accent thing- I’m from London and none of my family and friends say it.
I know it’s judgy, but using it just makes people sound extremely uneducated.

PedantScorner · 16/08/2024 17:47

@BakedBeansforabrain , too for two isn't poor grammar, it is poor spelling.

PedantScorner · 16/08/2024 17:49

Why are some of you using multiple punctuation marks?

Riapia · 16/08/2024 17:52

I seen that wrote in MN posts.
I were gonna report it.

Or maybe free?😄

Bbq1 · 16/08/2024 17:57

I used to be shocked at school when I would hear my peers say, "He threwed the ball", "Can you borrow me a pen?" and the worst of all saying that somebody, "learned me that". I have actually heard adults using the last one in recent years. I also can't stand people saying "It's more better"...

My mate that drives me nuts with this is 62, I don't think we can blame current schooling!!🤪🤪

I've learnt to accept his bloody awful way with words, he says too many other things like this & has bigger fish to fry in life to try to get him to change now!

my even bigger bug of his is using completely the wrong word so often, 😳😳

but he's my friend & I care about him so my ears have come to accept it...

on here I roll my eyes & just think people have grown up in areas where this is common and it's what they have learnt(learned) 🤷🏻‍♀️

lots of things just make me smile....

needs done
I was sat
etc

tapestry of life...

Monkeysatonthewall · 16/08/2024 17:58

Nooooo.. just no 😂

Same with 'you was'

It does, I agree, so I try not to do it. On the occasions when I'm full flow into a proper North London rant to other North London people it does sometimes slip out then but🤷‍♀️, I can't be too upset about it. As uneducated as I may sound in those moments, I'm secure enough in myself to know that doesn't erase the degree from a top university renowned for it's posh intake and all of the more useful things I've learned since.

As you was... 😄

Greigeisthelatestbeige · 16/08/2024 21:25

‘Needs doing’ is another one.
