"I done"

It seems bafflingly common. Why? "I done what he asked", for example. Does this drive anyone else mad?

It’s dialect. It makes me cringe, but then again I love the UK’s variety in accent and dialect, so I let it go.

Meh. I accept it as a regionalism. The Chester draws of this world get under my skin a lot more.

WickieRoy · 06/08/2024 10:03

Yup, dialect. I don't love it, but it's common where I live now. The vast majority of people wouldn't use it formally.

Seymour5 · 06/08/2024 10:15

Which regions? Where I grew up some people say 'I done'. 300 miles South, some people say it. Just as in both places some say 'we was'.

Both grate my gears.

WickieRoy · 06/08/2024 10:51

I done and I seen would both be used in parts (not all) of Ireland and NI. You wouldn't hear "we was" much here though at all, that sounds English to me.

We London and I can't stand it. Ditto we was, I went xxx not I went to, free for three, wiv for with, I could go on and on.

My children are picking it up from school and mil isn't great either. She used to say when they were small 'wanna go wee?'.

I'm currently threatening with elocution lessons. I understand direct and linguistics but I do judge, and it does impact on career / work options because people are full of unconscious bias.

I've pulled my kids up for saying 'I got free for free on offer' it doesn't even make sense.

Rant over, and no doubt this is littered with mistakes as I am posting from a sunbed without my glasses!
