Etc and ect

For the umpteenth time this morning, I have read a thread where a poster uses “ect” instead of “etc”. Would these people actually say “ec cetera” IRL? Do they not know that “etc” is an abbreviation of et cetera? I never saw this until I came onto Mumsnet, and I just find it….a bit odd. I must be getting old!

'Etc' is an abbreviation for 'et cetera', which means 'and other things'. Perhaps just use 'and so on' instead. We don't have to use Latin tags.

Tip not top 😂

I think I meant to write that and speel chuck thought it knew best 🤦‍♂️

No matter how much one checks, something always slips past.

'Loose' and 'lose' are my bugbears at the moment.

Of course we dont but if someone does they should spell correctly, no ones saying etc is compulsory

What about “nucular”?

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 29/07/2024 19:55

This is really common but I always assumed it was a typo... Perhaps being too generous.

Sussurations · 29/07/2024 19:58

Gapping instead of gaping, scrapping instead of scraping, a colleague who seems to think eg and ie are interchangeable - ect is the least of my pedantic bugbears. It’s certainly not the worse one I see. Autocorrect suggests etc, though, so presumably some of ect-ers think they know better 🤷‍♀️

Per say and on route are also on my list.

Speel chuck really gets confused if a dot is used though 🤦‍♂️
