Consult v Consultation.

Inspired by an existing thread so this might get removed, however I've also noticed this in conversation recently (with DW).
I think 'consult' is a verb and 'consultation' is a noun. Why do people now talk about 'a consult', and is it only me who thinks this just sounds wrong?

Yes it’s the same as an ‘invite’ vs an invitation.

Not just you, it's wrong.

It's an evolution of language. English shows for nouns to be used as verbs and vice-versa. They are no longer quite the same word.

Consult, invite have the stress on the second syllable when they are verbs, but on the first syllable when they are nouns.

I'm largely inured to 'invite' being used as a noun because it's in such common use now, but to me 'a consult' is both unfamiliar and a very ugly usage.

Thank you for the gentle reminder (although I hadn't actually forgotten that 🤣).

I agree with you. There are plenty of usages about which people say 'oh, it's just an evolution of language', but which I find ugly or redundant - or just plain wrong!

I think I know the thread you mean and I almost posted about it myself but I knew it was not appropriate to do so on the thread itself 😀.

I think it is widely used to mean “consultation” in America so people are just mimicking what they hear on TV.

It's an abbreviation with a different pronunciation.

I consult on a case (cun-SULT).

I have an appointment for a consult. (CON-sult, short for consultation)
