Apostrophe hell.

I keep seeing the incorrect use of apostrophes in dates, for example 'the 90's.'

It should be '90s. The apostrophe indicates the missing characters. It does NOT have one before the letter s. The apostrophe is so misused...sob! Can we do anything?

Oh yes, definitely. It's everywhere, sadly. Very annoying.

And company’s (meaning more than one)

I like to think I'm good at apostrophes, but the one I always struggle with is Mother's Day.

Should it be:
Mother's Day - a day for mother
Mothers' Day - a day for all the mothers

The internet thinks it's the first one, so I tend to go with that, but it kind of feels like it should be the second one.

I always use the second one as it is a day for many mothers. Mothers' Day. But I think I am alone!

I much prefer James’ book than James’s book - the second one looks wrong!

Think about how you say 'James's' though. It's two syllables

The one that really bothers me is James’ book, rather than James’s book. It’s not two or more people called Jame sharing a book. Yet the former appears to have been taught as correct at some point. Why??

Because it is correct.

CrunchyCarrot · 09/03/2024 08:00

James' book is correct as the name ends in an 's'. I was taught that in school many decades ago.

I think practice varies, but AFAIK the classical position is that only Biblical and big historical names that end in s don’t take the possessive apostrophe: Moses’ laws, that sort of thing.

I’d always say and write “James’s book”.

I'm not sure that was the point of the picture ...

I'm not sure that was the point of the picture ...

Does that mean that you thought I hadn't noticed the lower line?

Do you think it was made deliberately to attract attention?
