Am sick of the over use of this word...

OP posts:

I hate "heads up" but have to use it a fair amount at work. What else can you use instead though?

boudoiricca · 18/03/2008 23:07

well look at the antonyms; feeble, weak, unimpressive

although I agree it shouldn't be a dichotomy, I know which I'd rather be!

onebatmother · 18/03/2008 23:51

bink, sociolect is my new idiomatic bf.

I find myself saying 'hey, guys!' to groups of more than 2 kids, in manner of person who was last in an office c. 1987.

Tinker · 18/03/2008 23:57

Gosh, I take being called feisty as a compliment. Was also called spirited by a boss once; liked that as well. Truculent is perfect for my eldest daughter. Or just rude.

onebatmother · 18/03/2008 23:59

yes truculent is rather more definite, isn't it?

your boss fancied you.

Tinker · 19/03/2008 00:01

ha ha. He did actually

Swedes · 19/03/2008 09:53

Is heads up the same as putting your cards on the table?

Swedes · 19/03/2008 09:53

Spirited is equine too.

Swedes · 19/03/2008 09:57

Sadly outgrown. 14'2 9 year old spirited Chestnut mare.

needs experieced rider - strictly no novices.

onebatmother · 19/03/2008 11:37

v g Swedes!

heads up is NOT NORMAL ANYTHING

sadly outgrown. 16' 40 year old bay mare, withered fetlocks, patchy mane. Can no longer compete but might suit blind inexperienced rider.

Swedes · 19/03/2008 12:04

OBM - LOL @ patchy mane. I keep telling people that a Brazilian requires careful and frequent maintenance - if you are sloppy mare don't do it is always my advice.

onebatmother · 19/03/2008 12:09

Umberto is remarkably low-maintenance, actually, and so attentive.

Threadworm · 19/03/2008 12:24

I love meerkats. Now they are feisty.

onebatmother · 19/03/2008 12:36

really threadie? They always look to me as though they suffer from low-level anxiety.

Threadworm · 19/03/2008 12:43

It's the high-level ones (heads up) that are anxious.

There was a natural-world soap opera about meerkats on telly a few months ago. Their antics were v. much more appealing than those of the characters in most soap operas.

Threadworm · 19/03/2008 12:44

Actually it was a bit like Mumsnet. There was an uber-female and all the other females had to go out of their way to defer to her.

onebatmother · 19/03/2008 14:04

lolololololololololol
great post threadie I must say

i farking heart threadie

moomooface · 19/03/2008 14:35

I think Heads Down might be a bingo expression (or is that eyes down?) Either way, I much prefer Swedes soixante neuf interpretation . Meerkat Alley was brilliant - I do love a good matriarchal set up

Threadworm · 19/03/2008 14:42

... and a good matriarchal set-to (a la Mumsnet)

Threadworm · 19/03/2008 14:43

Oh and thank you for hearting me onebat. I've not been hearted on MN before.

Swedes · 19/03/2008 14:45

moomooface. You are out of touch. Heads up is now known as mash

onebatmother · 19/03/2008 15:30

did you get the alpha female thing tho threadie. You are head girl.

for today.

Threadworm · 19/03/2008 18:04

You were pretending to heart me to satirise sucking up to MN Elders

Don't even pretend to think I am head girl. The real ones will come and murder my pups.

onebatmother · 19/03/2008 19:36

I DO heart you! Oh no! Now I have upset you, as well as having previous with your young...

Forgive me!

midnightexpress · 19/03/2008 21:23
