Phased or Fazed

I had always thought that when a person sails through an experience with no issues or is unruffled in a crisis, that the correct word was that they were un-fazed by the experience.

However I am reading a novel and the author says un-phased. Which to me looks totally wrong.

Anyone know for sure the correct term, and the origins of the word?

A quick google search also produces contradictory information.

Unfazed, no hyphen I think

CremeEggThief · 05/01/2024 21:33

I think the same as you, OP.

Chuffaluffa · 05/01/2024 21:33

I agree with you.

to me ‘fazed’ is a state, ‘phased’ is what traffic lights are, etc.

Unfazed - to be unconcerned/not disturbed.

Phased - carried out in stages.

Wytchy · 05/01/2024 21:34

It's 'unfazed'.

Is the book you're reading a self-published novel?

Grimmz · 05/01/2024 21:36

Your novelist needs a better editor.

Phase means stage. Faze refers to someone's composure.

Thank you. There's nothing quite like having your belief reinforced by strangers on the Internet!
And yes, now I see it written down, it looks correct without the hyphen.
It is not a self-published novel, no. Published by Snowbooks. Who I have never heard of. But up until now, I was quite enjoying it.

Unfazed, I agree.

I think the proofreading in some novels is less than robust, so not surprising it’s not accurate.

notanothernana · 10/01/2024 09:38

Well I have learned something today.

Novels are often badly edited.

i read a howler on here the other day, unfortunately my memory is absolutely crap so I can't remember what it was. But it was a new one, not the usual.

determinedtomakethiswork · 10/01/2024 10:05

That publisher is an independent publisher though. They may not be accessing professional proofreaders.

I have noticed that phased is being used in place of fazed more and more. One of my pet peeves.
