...when I was a student, so many years ago I could cry, a tutor corrected my essay. I had written 'bored of...' and he crossed it out in big red pen and put 'bored with...'

I am convinced 'bored of...' is acceptable usage and now still obsess about it. Who is right?

Welcome to Mumsnet and more importantly welcome to PEDANTS' CORNER!

While I'm about it I'd just like to draw your attention to your -ahem- American spelling of instil (or are you Stateside?)
(you haven't made it on Pedants' Corner if no-one's picked you up on your previous post - or at least that's what I tell myself (see above))

moomooface · 18/03/2008 18:26

I am not stateside (I know my zeds from my zees ) so I must stand corrected although my Chambers does say you can spell it either way but, as you say, the double L must be the US way.

Glad to have been well and truly indoctrinated in to the Pedants' Corner and to have passed the initiation test .

(the second test is how you react - if you get all huffy then you don't belong to the club so welcome!)

PS Did have to go and check in the dictionary myself before picking you up on "instill" by the way
