Why do I keep seeing breath when breathe is meant?

Also none being written instead of non? As in none-stick, for example. Very frustrating. I wonder if its because they come up as the middle word suggestion when typing and so people either think they're correct, or close enough? 😭

I don't know but it's infuriating.

ShowOfHands · 17/10/2023 19:57

Breath and breathe have been mixed up for as long as I've been on the Internet.

<And breath> has been added to the end of posts on MN for two decades.

cptartapp · 17/10/2023 19:57

And 'RIP. Go fly with the angles'. Grrrrrr.

marshmallowfinder · 18/10/2023 09:13

Wish it would all just stop!

I keep seeing people who don't know how to punctuate sentences correctly. That's irritating. Especially when they seem to think their English is so superior to others.

LulooLemon · 18/10/2023 14:48

For the same reason you see loose when they mean lose.

ainkipinky · 18/10/2023 14:50

Same as "bought and brought"

MaggieBsBoat · 18/10/2023 14:53

Regurly. Just saw this in a director’s PowerPoint presentation.

The point is I think that people

  • have poor spelling
  • don't place a value on good spelling
  • don‘t proof read properly
whichever it is, it’s frustrating if in a professional setting.
RiverRed · 18/10/2023 14:57

Lead instead of ‘led’ another favourite …

redribbonrose · 18/10/2023 18:45

Meet not met
Loose not lose

Whoever wrote that should fly with angle grinders.

DiscoBeat · 21/10/2023 10:52

It's a none-event. Take a deep breathe and ignore it. 😆

KateMiddletonsExtensions · 21/10/2023 10:54

People often write about none dancers on Strictly forums. It took me ages to work out they meant people like Les Dennis and John Sargent rather than there being no dancers, when I could quite clearly see there were plenty.

And people who put "none working day" on their Google calendars look a bit daft.

DiscoBeat · 21/10/2023 10:54

'should of' annoys me. And I knew someone once who used to write 'hes' instead of his. Grrrr.

Fifireee · 21/10/2023 10:55

Alot if people on mumsnet definafely can’t spell. Or they’re dyslexic.

DRS1970 · 21/10/2023 10:56

Similar story with bath and bathe. 🙃

"Non angli, sed angeli."

Oh gosh I see "his" instead of he's. As in "I bought Billy a new Arsenal kit and his chuffed to bits with it."

Nobody writes shis for she's, so they know he's and his are proper words or contractions, and shis isn't, so it baffles me more than ever.

I can only think it's about how people speak and think words are phonetically spelled. Hence been instead of being etc:

Seen as your* going too can I have a lift!
I love been at home at the weekend

Etc.

*Deliberate; this would be typical.
