Thenk yiew

I hear "thank you" said frequently in various contexts - which is great.

But am I the only one constantly to hear "thenk/think yiew"? Not an accent thing, more just a popular annoying way of pronouncing it.

Thenk is how the royals say it.

Also, instead of yes, they say ears.

It’s not as bad as noone. That’s not a word.

I always find that particular pronunciation to be very American. Particularly in California. It's awful! I can't bear the sound of it and you hear it on TV all the time.

It's just a different (and correct) way of pronouncing the vowels in the words. It's definitely an accent thing.

What do any of those have to do with the pronunciation of "thank you" Confused

Flakey99 · 25/08/2023 19:07

I'm going to start saying 'ears' instead of Yes everywhere from now on. 😂

FutureThroughLensOfThePast · 25/08/2023 19:12

Isn't it just a humorous pronunciation - Ay thenk yew?

Try listening to Boris Johnson say "coronavirus". It comes out as something like "craynavase".

Disagree : it’s everywhere and not specifically accented. DS’s GF (20) is a real offender for this and has a pretty mainstream S English accent. But I think the US TV influence is strong.

I would never ask her if she’s trying to say ‘thank you’ but I do think it…

It doesn’t seem humorous but I wondered if it’s a bit ironic: or a bit “I’m being polite, but it’s embarrassing”.

I do accept I may be overthinking this.
