I like confelicitation because the world has quite enough schadenfreude already.

Londontown12 · 21/07/2023 17:45

purdy - pretty
Tardy - Late

ZittiEBuoni · 21/07/2023 17:48

Pusillanimous, which my brother used in a year 7 essay Grin. Meaning a bit timorous or fainthearted.

I was astonished when I found out pulchritude meant beauty, it sounds like a nasty skin disease to me.

7eleven · 21/07/2023 17:48

Kerfuffle - fuss or commotion “What’s all this kerfuffle about?”

Dimpsy- low light “It’s gone a bit dimpsy in here. Put the light on.”

Cattenberg · 21/07/2023 17:48

apricity - the warmth of the sun in winter

Oleaginus · 21/07/2023 17:52

One of my favourite words is "gound", the crusty secretion you wipe from your eyes in the morning. I just called it "sleep" for years.

Lilacshade · 21/07/2023 17:55

Conniptions. Lots of it about on MN.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 21/07/2023 17:56

Tintinnabulation. A ringing or tinkly sound. Verb, to tintinnabulate. Adjective, tintinnabular - as in MN favourite, tintinnabular little laugh.

JaneJeffer · 21/07/2023 17:59

Callipygian - having beautifully shaped buttocks

Callipygian - having beautifully shaped buttocks

And the winner is... 🤣

spiderlight · 21/07/2023 18:02

My absolute favourite word is crepuscular - active at dawn and dusk.

Another fabulous word (discovered via the equally fabulous Thea Gilmore) is vespering - moving towards the sunset.

FrivolousTreeDuck · 21/07/2023 18:02

Swive - archaic verb for sexual intercourse. Always makes I laaarf when said in cod 'medieval' accent.😃

’Firmament’ is one I’ve come across a few times recently but never used. Means the arch/vault of the sky/heavens.

Quite a businesslike word for something rather grand and poetic.

I like my mother's definition of crepuscular.... "of the twilight"... sounds eerily enchanting.

I use this day to day.

I rather like the airport (perhaps LAX) which has a recombobulation area.

Riapia · 21/07/2023 18:14

Old Lincolnshire.

Gollop, golloping, golloped.

Meaning to eat or drink greedily, quickly.

“ He, she golloped it down. “

Clunch.

Unsociable. Someone of very few words.
To be described as “clunch” by a Lincolnshire person you would have to be very anti social. Just being unsociable is a local characteristic, we have perfected it through centuries of in breeding.

great use of the octothorpe there OP!

Many good ones have been mentioned so far - my contribution is garrulous which is a wonderfully appropriate word for an annoyingly wordy and talkative person. yes, I'm guilty.

Ineedwinenow · 21/07/2023 18:17

I love the Victorian word “Flapdoodle” it was used to describe a man who was shite in bed or lady’s private parts! Grin

LunaNorth · 21/07/2023 18:19

Crapulous - the sick, bloated feeling after eating too much.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/07/2023 18:23

Stratocumulus · 21/07/2023 16:44

Discombobulate
Discombobulating

Confuse/Confusing

It's against the Law to say discombobulate in anything other than Rowan Atkinson's voice, you know.

'BoBBB'

Which, of course, leads us to 'Wibble'.

Widdershins - anticlockwise.

Crepuscular - active around dawn and dusk/twilight hours.

I was going to come on and say this, it's such a beautiful word and concept.

I knew someone would say petrichor, what I particularly love about it is that it's a relatively new word, it was made up by scientists in the 1960s. Back in the day when scientists tstill had a classical education. See also: apoptosis (1970s word for programmed cell death, e.g. the biological process that occurs when leaves fall off trees).

There are lots of excellent Scottish words that should be used more widely. Everyone now knows outwith and PPs have mentioned oxter and mither. But a more obscure word from Orkney that needs to be more widely used is swadge which is to relax and digest your food after a large meal. Very useful on Christmas Day.

Jongleterre · 21/07/2023 18:27

Tantivy.

Gallop at full pace.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/07/2023 18:28
